The troll is a kind of monster in Nordic mythology. However, the character Troll does not stay in the narrative of myth, but is constantly changed and transformed from the present to the present, and also appears as a friendly figure in the picture book for children. By analyzing how the nature of the trolls in the Nordic picture book has changed, we can understand the culture phenomenon of children newly. The nature of trolls has been changed into three forms according to the changes in the relationship between people, nature and society. First, trolls in mythology appear in various forms as threatening and destructive supernatural beings, and they symbolize the harsh nature of nature. Humans who have been weak in front of nature have created a troll as a fearful being roaming in the dark. Secondly, the troll in the fairy tale is a human-oriented person who wants to resemble and admire human beings. Overcoming some of the natural dangers due to the development of civilization and science, trolls are shaped as being able to defeat and reflect the fear that the object is not in the outside but in the human world. Third, since the 20th century, in the modern picture book, trolls are identified with individual humans, especially children, and are represented as symbols representing the heterogeneous nature of human beings rather than individuals separate from humans. Thus, it can be seen that the trolls have not remained one fixed character from the classical period to the present, but are constantly evolving by the intertextuality.

트롤은 북유럽 신화에서 기원한 일종의 괴물이다. 그러나 트롤이라는 인물은 신화의 서사 속에 머무르지 않고 현대에 이르기까지 끊임없이 변화되고 변형되어 나타나고 있으며 어린이를 위한 그림책에서도 친근 한 인물로 등장하고 있다. 북유럽 그림책에 나타난 트롤의 성격이 어떻 게 변화하여 왔는지를 분석해봄으로써 어린이의 문화 현상을 새롭게 이 해 할 수 있을 것이다. 트롤의 성격은 인간과 자연, 사회와의 관계 변화 에 따라 세 가지 형태로 변화되어 왔다. 첫째는 신화 속의 트롤은 위협 적이고 파괴적인 초자연적인 존재로서 다양한 형태로 나타나며, 혹독한 자연의 모습을 은유한다. 자연 앞에서 한없이 나약했던 인간들이 어둠 속에서 배회하는 두려운 존재로서의 트롤을 탄생시켰다. 둘째는 전래 동화 속의 트롤은 인간을 동경하고 닮고 싶어 하는 인간지향적인 성격 을 보인다. 문명과 과학의 발전으로 인해 자연의 위험을 어느 정도 극복 하면서 트롤은 물리칠 수 있는 존재로 형상화되고 두려움의 대상이 외 부의 타자가 아니라 인간 세계 내부에 있음을 반영한다. 셋째는 20세기 이후 현대의 그림책 속에서 트롤은 개개의 인간, 특히 어린이와 동일시 되고 있으며 인간과 분리된 개체라기보다는 인간 내면의 이질적인 성격을 표현하는 상징으로 나타나고 있다. 이처럼 트롤은 고전 시대부터 현 재까지 하나의 고정된 성격으로 머물러 있지 않고 상호텍스트성에 의해 지속적으로 진화하고 있음을 알 수 있다.
