The paper examined the history of research on formularies of letters published from the late of Joseon period till modern period of time in Korea. The research on formularies of letters has been continued for almost 20 years since it began in the new millennium of 2000. However, despite its importance and potential value, the research results are still insufficient. The formularies of letters are divided according to the period of publication: published in the late of Joseon period and published in modern period. Then the ones published in the late of Joseon period can be categorized into two types of language characters: written in Chinese characters, Hanja, and written in Korean characters, Hangeul. Accordingly, the study was proceeded based on those categories, to scrutinize the research on formularies of letters. The collection of formularies written in Chinese character includes 10 research papers and 1 volume of monography, researched by Kim Hyo-kyeong, Park Dae-hyeon, Ryu Joon-kyeong, Park Cheol-sang, and Ahn Sang-soo. Those researches contributed to reveal some bibliographic information, composition forms, and its contents in the collection written in Chinese characters, including ‘Gansikyupyeon(簡式類編)’, ‘Hanhweoncharok(寒喧箚 錄)’, and ‘Gandokjeongyo(簡牘精要)’. The formularies of letters published in the late of Joseon period include ‘Eongandok’, ‘JingboEongandok’, and ‘Gyuhabhanhweon(閨閤寒喧)’, and they were investigated by eight researchers, Hong Eun-jin, Kim Nam-kyung, Kim Bong-jwa, Kim Jong-chul, Baek Doo-hyun, Kim Eun-seong, and Kim Soo-jeong. Among them, ‘Eongandok’ have been studied the most in various aspects from the various points of views on language, including History of Korean Language, Stylistics, Bibliography, History of Korean Language Life, and History of Korean Language Teaching. For the study of modern period, there have been a total of 13 research papers. Researchers include Hong In-sook, Park Eun-kyung, Park Hae-nam, and Kim In-hui. Compared to the situation in which the formularies of letters were popular to be significant increase in publication in 1920s and 30s, the research results were still insignificant. Accordingly, this paper offered some suggestions to contribute to the development of the study of formularies of letters. The first is creating catalog of the formularies published between the late of Joseon period and the modern period. The second is aggregating and building Database of the collection and classifying the letter examples according to themes or subjects. The third is translating the collection with additional annotations or comments. Those three stages of works are necessary to conduct the research on formularies of letters on macroscopic and microscopic levels.

본고에서는 조선후기부터 근대시기 사이에 편찬된 간찰서식집들에 대한 연구가 어떤 측면에서 얼마만큼 진행되었는지 그 연구사를 검토해 보았다. 간찰서식집에 대한 연구는 대체로 2000년대 들어서부터 시작되어 거의 20년 가까이 되었지만, 현존하는 간찰서식집의 수량과 그 중요성에도 불구하고 예상외로 연구 성과가 많 지 않았다. 간찰서식집은 크게 조선후기와 근대시기의 간찰서식집으로 나눌 수 있고, 조선 후기는 다시 한문 간찰서식집과 한글 간찰서식집으로 구분된다. 따라서 간찰서식 집에 대한 연구사 검토도 편의상 이 구분을 따라 진행하였다. 조선후기 한문 간찰 서식집에 대한 연구로는 총 10여개의 논문과 단행본 1권이 있다. 연구자로는 김효 경, 박대현, 류준경, 박철상, 박상수가 있는데, 이들의 연구로 한문 간찰서식집, 즉 『간식유편(簡式類編)』, 『한훤차록(寒喧箚錄)』, 『간독정요(簡牘精要)』, 『후사류집(候 謝類集)』, 『간독회수(簡牘會粹)』 등의 서지 사항과 구성 방식 및 내용 등이 어느 정도 밝혀졌다. 조선후기 한글 간찰서식집으로는 『언간독』, 『징보언간독』, 『규합한훤(閨閤寒 喧)』 이 있는데, 이에 대한 연구로는 총 8개의 논문이 있다. 연구자로는 홍은진, 김남경, 김봉좌, 김종철, 백두현, 김은성, 김수정이 있다. 주로 『언간독』 에 대한 연구 가 많았는데, 국어사적 관점, 문체론적 관점, 서지학적 관점, 국어생활사적 관점, 국어교육사적 관점 등 다양한 측면에서 『언간독』 연구에 접근하였다. 근대시기 간찰서식집에 대한 연구로는 총 13개의 논문이 있다. 연구자로는 홍인 숙, 박은경, 박해남, 김인회 등이 있다. 1920~30년대에 간찰서식집이 유행하여 대 거 출간되었던 상황에 비해 이에 대한 연구가 아직은 전반적으로 미미하였다. 무엇보다 개별 간찰서식집에 대한 연구가 부족한데, 특히 당시 대중들이 많이 애용 하였던 『척독대방』에 대한 단독 연구가 하나도 없는 것이 아쉬웠다. 한편 간찰서식집에 대한 바람직한 연구를 수행하기 위해 몇 가지 의견을 제시 해 보았다. 첫째 근대 간찰서식집에 대한 목록 작성, 둘째 간찰서식집의 집성 및 DB화 작업, 그리고 예문 간찰의 주제별 분류, 셋째 간찰서식집에 대한 역주(譯註) 작업이다. 이 세 가지는 간찰서식집에 대한 거시적 미식적 차원의 연구를 진행하기 위해 필요한 작업이다.
