The purpose of this study is to find the ways to enhance the roles of Korean local newspapers in a multicultural society. The study focuses on the newspapers’ contents of local, nation, and world news which are in relations to promoting multiple citizenship. Through comparative content analysis of a Korean and an American local newspapers, it finds that the Korean local newspaper has focused heavily on the local news, while reported world news in a very limited format and failed in representing diverse perspectives. In conclusion, it discusses the ways of developing local newspapers as an educational tool for facilitating multiple citizenship of Koreans.

지구·지방화에 따라 개인은 국민 정체성을 기반으로 지역민으로서, 또 세계시민으 로서 건전한 정체성을 형성하고 공동체 의식을 만들어나가는 일이 중요해졌다. 본 연구 에서는 이 같은 다중시민성 고양을 위한 평생 학습의 제재로 지역신문이 가진 기능에 주 목하고 2019년 1월 1일부터 15일 사이 발행된 한국의 『부산일보』와 미국의 『샌프란시스코 크로니클』을 중심으로 지역, 국가, 세계 뉴스에 대한 콘텐츠 분석을 실시하였다. 다중시민성 함양의 관점에서 한국의 지역신문은 미국의 사례에 비해 지역사회 소식을 전달하는 기능에 치중하는 경향이 두드러졌으며, 세계 뉴스의 소재 및 인적 구성의 다양 성이 떨어지는 것으로 나타났다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 결론에서 시민의 다중시민성 제 고를 위한 한국 지역신문의 발전 방안을 제시하였다.
