Thε main subject in cogrut1ve linguistics is to seek motivation in linguistic phenomena. Language is the result of human behavior, in which all human behaviors are bound to have respective aim and purposε of its own. linguistic phenomena are not an event that happens arbitrarily and randomly, but rather a process that goes through motivation in its own way. Traditionally, syntactic categories, such as nouns and verbs, have been defìned according to grammatical principles. Grammatical principles on syntactic categories outline that words are classifìed into categories not based on their defìnitions, but rather based on the distribution of syntactical behavior pattern or morphological behavior pattern. Contrary to this view of study, cognitive linguists argue that syntactic categories are motivated. In particular, Langacker (1987: 189) claims that “ basic grammatical categories such as noun, verb, adjective, and adv<εrb are semantically defìnable." He insists that the classification between noun and verb are not dependent on the objective attributes of the situation, but are more influenced by the process in which the situation gets conceptualized. The aim of this paper is to motivate grammatical categories such as nouns and verbs. To achieve this goal, 1 wiU discuss semantic flexibility of nouns and verbs in the context of cognitive linguistics.

인지언어학에서 호뮤는 언어 현상에서 동기호}를 찾는 문제이다. 언 어가 인간 행동의 산물이고 인간 행동에는 나름대로의 목적과 의도가 있기 마련이다. 언어 현상 역시 임의적이고 자의적인 것이 아니라 나름 대로의 동기화를 강추고 있는 것이다. 전통적으로 명사와 동사 같은 통 사적 범주는 문법적 원리에 기초해서 정의되어 왔다. 통사적 범주에 대 한 문법적 원리란， 단어는 의미에 따라서가 아니라 통사적 행동 양식이 나 형태론적 행동 양식인 분포에 기초해서 통사적 범주가 할당된다는 것이다. 이에 반해， 인지언어학에서는 통사적 범주가 동기호멘다고 주 장한다 특히， Langacker(1987: 189)는 “명사， 동사， 형용사， 부사 와 같은 기본적인 문법적 범주는 의미적으로 정의할 수 있다’고 주장한 다. 그는 명사와 동사의 구벌이 상황의 객관적인 자질에 의해 유발되는 것이 아니라， 상황이 개념화되는 방식과 관련이 있다고 강조한다. 이 논문의 목표는 명사 및 동사와 같은 통사적 범주를 동기화하는 것이다. 이런 목적을 위해 다음 장들에서는 통사적 범주 중에서 각각 명사와 동 사의 의미적 유연성을 인지언어학적으로 다룰 것이다.
