The study focused on the analysis of the novel [Eel Stew] and [Laughter] by Kwon Ji-yea. It aims to extract meaning through use and variations of pictorial factors appeared on her novels. The use of picture itself and pictorial factors in the two novels turned out to be in a mutual influence relationship with the texts rather than existing by themselves seperately. The sequence interaction of the pictorial factors and analogy was embedded in the epic structure. In [Eel Stew], the main character and other characters were corresponding with consciousness, unconsciousness, behaviours, and personalities in the texts structured upon the image and imagination acquired from pictures. Also, the pictures were stirring up the reality within and out of the novels through lives and desires, and this was causing a lot of tension. Furthermore, images of the pictures were substituting for what the author failed to describe through narration, and the inside of the narrator which appears as images intervenes in the epic structure. [Laughter] can be understood in this context as well. It has in common that the pictures in the novel were used as tools for symbols related to the theme of the novel. As it is seen through the analysis on the two novels by Kwon Ji-yea, it could be noticed that the use and variations of pictorial factors in her novels provoke metaphor and symbolism, and these contribute to embodiment of the theme through delicately associating with her unique writing style.

본고는 권지예 소설에 나타난 회화의 수용과 변용을 통해서 소설의 서사성과의 관련 성을 구명하는데 주안점을 두었다. 두 작품을 분석한 결과, 소설에서 사용된 회화는 작품의 주제와 관련하여 하나의 상징이 되는 도구로 사용된 공통점을 갖는다. 흔히 소설 에서 회화가 전경화 되어서 소설 작품 전체의 분위기를 조성하는 경우도 있지만, 두 작품처럼 소설의 개연성을 높여 리얼리티도 함께 유지시켜주는 역할을 한 경우는 드물 다. 이러한 점에서 두 소설은 회화가 가지고 있는 각각의 이미지를 소설 작품 속에 살 려 작품을 읽는 동안 독자를 긴장과 흥미에 빠뜨리며, ‘욕망’에 대한 작가의 생각을 회 화가 제공한 새로운 인식에 투영한 점에서 시사점을 제공해 준다. 또한 이러한 연구가 더 심화되기 위해서는 동ㆍ서양 명화에 대한 역사적 이해는 물 론 미술 전반에 대한 관심과 조예가 별도로 요구된다. 요컨대, 소설의 회화적 요소의 수용과 변용이 서사성(서사구조 및 修辭)과 맞물려 있음은 물론 미학적 효과에 기여하 고 있음을 입증하기 위해서도 미술 전반에 대한 이해와 안목이 요구되기 때문이다. 앞으로 이러한 연구는 포스트모더니즘 시대를 넘어 다매체시대가 도래한 만큼 소설 속 에 투영된 음악, 영화, 그림, 상품을 수용하여 주인공으로 하여금 독자와 더불어 문화적 공감대를 형성하고 사회와 문화를 대변하는 장치로 사용하고 있는 실정을 감안해야 할 것 이다. 이것은 처음에는 단순한 기호(嗜好)의 표현에서 시작하여 결국에는 동일한 의식의 공유를 바탕으로 독자와 암묵적 대화를 나눔으로써 소설의 분위기와 상황을 고조시키고 소설의 현장성과 현실성을 부과하기 때문이다. 이러한 회화의 수용과 차용을 통한 서사성 의 확대는 이제까지 보여준 통속적 대중주의나 서구소설의 기법적 양식과는 상당한 거리 를 두고 있다. 관습화된 표현과 기법의 상투성을 거부하고 전통적 이야기 양식을 재창조 함으로써 새로운 서사의 가능성을 열어놓은 경우에 해당하기 때문이다.
