This study analyzes the popular memory into the background, characteristics, and subject of the resistance centered on a historical novel, Howling Bird in the Border written by Hyeon Gi Yeong. Firstly, this novel displays the popular memory about the Bang Seong Chil uprising and Lee Jae Su uprising. Those incidents are excluded in formal history. Secondly, this study about memory of society and economy examines the fact that the weak political and economic conditions of the country affects on the people suffering from a tax burden in those days. Thirdly, we can find the character of anti-external circumstances of Jeju people in the memory about a religion. The Roman Catholicism is important matter in that uprising. Fourthly, in the characteristic of the resistance, this study examines that the sense and the tradition of resistance of Jeju people is handed down through the memory of people. This novel searches the link of Jeju history describing the tradition of resistance as the prehistory of Jeju 4․3 incident. Fifthly, in the subject of resistance, the recognition of the people about Lee Jae Su is revealed. Sixthly, Hyeon Gi Yeong describes vividly the set of resistance and Jeju people in the viewpoint of people. This novel has meaning at the role of pioneer in the historical novel and in spurring the study about the hidden Jeju history.

이 글에서는 현기영 장편 『변방에 우짖는 새』에 나타난 민중의 기억을 항 쟁의 배경, 항쟁의 성격, 항쟁의 주체 등으로 나누어 분석했다. 정리하면 다 음과 같다. 첫째, 『변방에 우짖는 새』에는 공식역사에서 배제되었던 제주의 방성칠란 과 이재수란에 대한 민중의 기억이 드러나 있다. 둘째, 항쟁의 배경 중 사회․경제에 대한 기억에서는 당시 나약한 국가의 정치경제적 상황이 세폐의 문제로 민중들에게 영향을 끼쳤음을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 종교에 대한 기억에서는 이재수란의 중심에 천주교가 주된 문제로 작용하고 있으며, 외부로부터 유입된 봉세관과 천주교회의 세력화 과정이 빚 어낸 항쟁의 과정에서 제주도민들의 반외세적인 성격을 발견할 수 있다. 넷째, 항쟁의 성격에서는 제주도민의 저항의식과 항쟁의 전통이 민중의 기 억을 통해 전해지고 있음을 살펴보았다. 『변방에 우짖는 새』는 4ㆍ3의 전사 (前史)로 제주의 항쟁 전통을 그려내 제주역사의 연계성을 탐구하고 있다. 다섯째, 항쟁의 주체에서는 이재수를 민중들이 어떻게 인식했는지 살펴보 았다. 여섯째, 현기영은 민중의 시각에서 제주역사의 의미를 찾으며 촌로들의 증 언과 이재수 설화를 문학화함으로써 항쟁의 현장과 제주민중을 생동감 있게 그려냈다. 역사적 사건을 문화적으로 재현하는데 선구적인 역할을 했으며, 묻혀져 있 던 제주역사연구에 박차를 가하는 계기를 마련한 것은 『변방에 우짖는 새』의 의의라고 볼 수 있다.
