Marokyeoljeon is a series of novels consisting of five episodes, and each episode has a unique form and theme that stimulate readers’ interest. They are a kind of satirical novels. On the one hand, satire is a way of viewing the world and, on the other hand, its indirect expression provides a way to avoid censorship under the military regime. Accordingly, only when episodes in Marokyeoljeon are interpreted in connection to historical situations in the early 1970s when the novels were published, the writer’s intention is revealed clearly. What Marokyeoljeon is to criticize is the power and intellects’ behavior in those days. The mixture of various times and spaces and unrealistic incidents can be understood as devices for avoiding censorship under the military regime. While sensitive parts related to the maintenance of power are depicted with symbolic events, criticism against intellects, which was tolerated relatively, is described more directly. Marokyeoljeon satirizes all behaviors that power does in order to maintain its position. Power distorts history, propagates the government’s policies by mobilizing government‐controlled scholars, and tortures opponents. In contrast, intellects lose their role of criticizing power, and appear to be snobbish, be absorbed into power, or be involved actively in the regime. Satire criticizes an object by an indirect way rather than by a direct way. Particularly when it is used as a means to avoid censorship, the question is how much and successfully the writer’s intention is delivered to the readers. In this sense, it is meaningful to examine conditions for the accurate communication of the writer’s intention, and further discussions may be necessary on this issue.

「마록열전」은 1970년대 초반에 발표한 일종의 풍자소설이다. 풍자는 세상을 바라보는 방법이면서 또한 군사정권 하에서 검열을 피해 나가는 방법이 되기도 한다. 「마록열전」에 대한 기존의 논의는 이 작품에 나타난 풍자의 성격에 맞추어져 있는데, 이 작품이 가지고 있는 추상성과 모호함 으로 말미암아 아직 그 의미가 명확히 구명되지 않은 상태이다. 「마록열전」의 사건들은 1970년대 초반의 시대적 상황을 염두에 두고 구체적으로 해석됐을 때, 비로소 작가의 의도가 명백히 드러난다. 「마록열전」이 비판하려는 것은 당대의 권력과 지식인의 행태이다. 다양 한 시공간의 혼합, 비현실적인 사건들은 군사정권 하에서 권력의 검열을 피하기 위한 장치들로 이해할 수 있다. 권력의 유지와 관련된 부분은 민감 한 부분인 만큼 상징적 사건들로 처리되는데, 그 이면에는 삼선 개헌과 반 공주의에 대한 비판이 놓여 있다. 또한 「마록열전」은 권력이 자기 자신을 유지하기 위해 행하는 모든 행태들을 풍자한다. 권력은 역사를 왜곡하고 어용학자를 동원 정부 조치를 선전하고 고문을 자행한다. 이에 반해 지식 인들은 권력을 비판하는 역할을 상실한 채, 속물적인 모습으로 나타나거나 권력에 흡수 되는 모습으로 혹은 체제에 적극 가담하는 인물로 나타난다. 「마록열전」에서 풍자는 권력에 대한 비판의 방식이기도 하면서 또한 검 열을 피하기 위한 수단이기도 하다. 이 작품이 가지고 있는 추상성과 모호 함은 구체적인 시대상황과의 관련을 통해 해소될 수 있으나, 과연 독자들 에게 얼마나 성공적으로 전달되고 있는지는 의문의 여지가 남는다.
