There is assumed to be a benevolent dictator who decides how to produce a given number of literatures in order to maximize a social welfare comprising of readers’ benefits and production cost. In our simple model, the dictator has come to produce the literatures either exclusively in Hangul-only or Kana-only or exclusively in mixed letters with Hanja, depending on the relative cost of production and relative accessibility for each type of literature. One interesting aspect of our model is that one more mixed use literature would decrease the outstanding readers’ accessibility, but at the same time induce more readers to learn Hanja and offset the accessibility loss. The fact that Hangeul is a logogram explains why Korea has come to use Hangeul exclusively, while Japan still depends heavily on Hanja.

독자가 얻는 이익과 문헌생산 비용으로 구성된 사회후생을 극대화하기 위해 주어진 수의 문헌을 어떻게 생산할 것인가를 결정하는 자선적 독재자가 있다고 가정한다. 우리의 단순한 모형에서는 각 문헌형태의 상대적 생산비용과 상대적 접근성에 따라 자선적 독재자는 (i) 순 한글문헌만을 생산하거나 (ii) 혼용문헌만 을 생산하게 된다. 본 논문의 모형이 갖는 흥미로운 점은 “혼용문헌” 생산의 증가가 기존 독자들의 전체적인 문헌 접근성을 떨어뜨리지만 동시에 한자를 배우고자 하는 동기를 부여함으로써 접근성 하락을 상쇄한다는 것이다. 한글이 ‘표어문자’(logogram)라는 사실은 왜 한국이 “한글전용”을 하게 된 반면, 일본은 아직도 가나와 한자의 “혼용사용”에 크게 의존하고 있는지를 설명한다.
