Folk paintings depict the viewpoints of life and nature of our nation in a friendly and simple form. Many unknown artists resorted to folk paintings to rejoice their artistic freedom, untied to any formalities, in which the aspirations, philosophy, and aesthetics of ordinary people were expressed. The embellishment, creativity and distinctive narrative of these folk paintings resonate with the modern aesthetics, igniting the recent movement to reconsider the value of folk painting. Inspired by this trend, this study aims to contribute to the expanding the applicability of folk paintings and to create an opportunity to reevaluate beautiful artistry of hair art. We do this by producing four pieces of hair art “Songhakdo” which depicts cranes in the folk paintings, made of discarded hair that can be commonly encountered in everyday life. The four pieces of hair art “Songhakdo” illustrate a pine tree and a pair of crane, with the plum and peony put together differently. This not only gives symbolic meaning to the aesthetic values and objects embodied in the form and color of folk painting, but also asserts the process of symbolization of folk painting through which formulating image was shared with people. This attests to the fact that the element of folk painting suffices to be the source of creative inspiration. As a wonderful traditional cultural asset treasured by our people, folk paintings are well worth a reinterpretation in a modern way to preserve its value and artistry. Hair art is a new extension area in which folk paintings can evolve in a modern way, and various materials and characteristics of folk paintings are expected to lead to various contents of hair arts. It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field.

민화는 우리 민족의 삶과 자연을 바라보는 시각을 친근하고도 소박한 형식으로 그려낸 그림이다. 수많은 무명 작가들이 형식에 얽매이지 않고 그들의 예술세계를 자유롭게 구가 한 것이 곧 민화이고, 그렇기에 그 속에는 평범한 사람들의 염원과 철학, 미의식이 담겨 있다. 이러한 민화의 장식성과 창조성 그리고 특유의 화법은 현대적 미감과 부합되는 점이 많아 최근 민화의 가치를 재고시키는 움직임이 활발히 일어나고 있다. 본 연구는 그 흐름에 맥을 같이하고자 일상에서 흔하게 접할 수 있는 폐모발을 활용하여 민화 속 학을 소재로 한 헤어아트 작품 4점을 제작하였다. 이를 통해 민화 도상의 적용 가능성 확장에 기여하고 민화가 가진 아름다운 예술성이 헤어아트를 통해 재평가 받을 수 있도록 계기를 마련하고자 하였다. 4점의 헤어아트 작품은 소나무와 한 쌍의 학을 기본으로 하되 매화와 모란을 함께 넣어 구성을 달리하여 표현하였다. 연구 결과 민화 송학도의 조형과 색채가 구현해내는 미적 가치와 사물에 상징적 의미를 부여하고 그 이미지를 조형화시켜 사람들과 공유하는 민화의 상징화 과정을 확인할 수 있었으며 민화의 요소가 헤어아트 연구에 창의적인 영감의 원천이 될 수 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 민화는 우리 민족이 보유하고 있는 훌륭한 전통문화자산으로, 그 가치와 예술성을 보존하고자 현대적 으로 재해석하는 일은 의미 있다 사료된다. 헤어아트는 민화가 현대적으로 진화될 수 있는 하나의 새로운 확장 영역으로서 민화의 다양한 소재와 특성들은 헤어아트의 다양한 콘텐츠로 이어질 것으로 기대되며 이를 위한 후속 연구가 활발히 이루어지길 바란다.
