Japanese detective stories grew out of adapted Western detective stories and now has become a new and unique genre with its own special works and strange and unusual stories. Even now, with the peculiarities and unique quirks of Japanese culture, the Japanese detective story is constantly mass󰠏producing new and original content. The cultural peculiarities that are revealed in the course of solving world mysteries as well as the unique mysteries of the detective stories of Japan, is now recognized not only in Asia but also internationally. It has a tremendous impact and influence as representative content of Japan, which transcends the original purpose of the novel. This study analyzes the characteristics and growth processes of the Japanese detective story and examines the various possibilities of Japanese detective stories as representatives of cultural content material.

일본의 추리소설은 문명개화기에 수입된 서양의 추리소설이 번안(翻案)이라고 하는 새로운 창작문학으로 진화되었고 이것이 훗날 기성문학의 테두리로부터 일탈한 실험적 작품들, 기기 묘묘한 이야기들이 가득한 전위적인 엔터테인먼트의 터전이 되었다. 현재 아시아뿐만 아니라 전 세계적으로 인정받는 일본 추리의 독특한 세계와 ｢수수께끼｣이 해명되는 과정에서 자연스 럽게 드러나는 문화적 특수성은 소설이라는 단일 개념의 경계를 초월하여 일본을 대표하는 콘텐츠로써 엄청난 파급력을 자랑한다. 본고는 이러한 사실에 입각하여 일본 추리소설의 시 대별 흐름을 살펴보고 ｢본격｣, ｢변격｣, ｢사회파미스터리｣ 등 각 시기마다의 특징과 성장과정 을 분석함과 동시에 특권적 지위를 획득하는 과정에 초점을 맞춰 미디어믹스가 성공적으로 이루어진 일본 추리문학의 문화적 콘텐츠로써의 다양한 가치와 가능성을 고찰한 것이다.
