In this paper, I examine how aging population is represented and how the image of the elderly is changing in Japanese society. In addition, I delve into what socio󰠏cultural, political and economic context is driving this change. Lastly, I investigate how old people cope with the gaze that attempt to define an aging person as a ‘problematic being’ by focusing on the case of the elderly in Nagano through anthropological participation observation, in󰠏depth interviews, and literature analysis. As a result, I find that the discourse and knowledge about old age are produced more explosively than ever before in modern Japanese society, but the study shows that the anxiety of elderly people is getting worse and the negative image of aging is getting stronger. In conclusion, the study shows the necessity for the further examination of Japan's case whether the discourses related to the aging people are shaped more by the ideal model that the state or society desires than the voice of the old people.

본 논문에서는 인구고령화가 중요한 사회적 문제로 부각되면서 일본사회에서 노년이 재현 되는 방식 및 노년의 이미지가 어떻게 변화하고 있는지 분석했다. 또한, 이러한 변화를 추동 케 하는 사회문화적, 정치경제적 맥락은 무엇인지 고찰했다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 나가노현 노인들의 사례를 중심으로 노년을 ‘문제적 존재’로 규정하는 시선 및 시도들에 대해 어떻게 대응하는지 인류학적 참여관찰 및 심층인터뷰 및 문헌분석을 통해 규명했다. 논의 결과, 현대 일본사회에서 노년에 대한 담론과 지식이 그 어느 때보다도 폭발적으로 생산되고 있음에도 노인들의 불안은 더욱 심화될 뿐 아니라 노년의 부정적 이미지는 더욱 강화되고 있었다. 이 러한 논의를 통해 본 연구에서는 폭발적으로 증가하고 있는 노년 담론들이 당사자인 노인들 의 목소리보다는 국가나 사회가 바라는 이상적인 모델만을 제시하고 있는 것은 아닌지 일본 의 사례를 통해 고찰할 필요가 있음을 주장한다.
