At Mihwangsa Temple in Haenam are four Buddhist paintings produced in the mid-20th century. The first of the four, Guardian Deities (Sinjungdo), is hung on the western wall of Daeungjeon Hall, the temple’s main prayer hall; the remaining three -- Tejaprabha Buddha (Chiseonggwang Yeoraedo), Mountain God (Sansindo), and Solitary Saint (Dokseongdo) --are enshrined in Samseonggak Hall. The paintings were done in 1943 by monk-artist Kim Il-seop, who is widely regarded as a leading figure in Korean modern Buddhist painting. Made when the artist was in his early forties, the paintings show fine examples of the style developed by Kim Il-seop when his reputation as a Buddhist painter was at its peak. The paintings are also highly regarded since they were made in a comparatively earlier stage of his career as a Buddhist painter, with only a few works remaining today and having close connection with Seongyewon, a Buddhist art workshop and school he established in Gimje, Jeollabuk-do in the later 1930s. He used the institution as the base of his activities as a Buddhist artist participating with his students in a variety of art projects held across the Jeolla-do area. The paintings exhibit some characteristic features of Korea’s modern Buddhist painting including the use of the shading technique introduced from the Western painting.

해남 미황사의 근대기 불화는 총 4점이 현전한다. 한 점은 대웅보전의 서측 내벽에 걸린 <신중도>이고, 나머지 세 점은 삼성각에 걸린 <치성광여래도>와 <산신도>, <독성도>이다. 이 불화들의 제작자는 근현대기를 대표하는 화승 김일섭으로, 그가 남긴 작업일지를 통해 1943년에 4점을 일괄 제작하였음을 확인할 수 있다. 김일섭이 40대 전반기에 제작한 이 4점의 불화들은 그가 이름 난 화승으로 인정받던 시기 그의 화풍상의 특징을 잘 보여주는 주요한 불화들이다. 또한 이 작품들은 김일섭의 현전하는 불화들 중 작례가 많지 않은 비교적 이른 시기의 불화이다. 동시에 이 불화들은 그가 1930년대 후반 전북 김제에 불교미술전문제작소이자 교육기관이었던 성예원을 설치하고 제자들과 함께 전라도 지역에서 활발한 활동을 펼쳤던 시기의 불화로서뿐 아니라, 서양화의 명암법 등 근대기 불화의 특징들을 살필 수 있는 작품들로서도 주목할 만하다.
