The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the urgency of pastoral spirituality through the practice of stability in order to overcome the frantic faith caused by liquid fear and its privatization. The alternative is to understand the practice of stability of Egyptian desert fathers and mothers in the 4th century and present its application in modern pastoral contexts. First, this paper briefly analyzes the uncertainty and privatization of modern fear, which is very different from the dangers and fears experienced in traditional society, through Zygmunt Bauman's theory of liquid fear. Then, it reveals the situation that this fear in Protestantism promotes frantic faith through prosperity theology in the ideological aspect and religious consumerism in the way of life. Second, this paper examines the importance of physical stability and inner stability through the 4th-century Egyptian desert fathers and mothers who stressed stability in their ascetic lives before anyone else. Third, this paper suggests that stability emphasized in the desert spirituality should be applied in the modern pastoral context in three areas: the rule of life, self-awareness, and recovery of the locality.

본 연구의 목적은 목회 영성의 관점에서 공포의 사사화로 야기되는 난비(亂飛)하는 신앙을 ‘정주’의 신앙으로 변형시키는 목회 영성의 적실성을 이해하고, 그 대안으로 중세 수도원주의 정주 훈련의 기초를 형성했던 4세기 이집트 사막의 교부들의 수덕주의를 외적, 내적 정주로 구분하여 살펴보고, 현대 목회적 상황에서 몇 가지 실제적 적용들을 제시하는데 있다. 첫째, 이를 위해 본 연구는 전통사회에서 경험했던 위험과 공포와는 매우 다른 특징을 갖고 있는 현대의 공포의 불확정적 유동성과 사사화(privatization) 현상을 Zygmunt Bauman의 유동적 공포 이론을 통해 간략히 분석하고, 이같은 공포가 개신교 안에 이념적으로는 번영신학에 의해, 삶의 방식으로는 종교적 소비주의를 통해 난비하는 신앙을 부추기고 있는 상황을 폭로할 것이다. 둘째, 본 연구는 난비하는 신앙을 극복하기 위해, 자신들의 수덕적 삶을 통해 누구보다 먼저 ‘정주’의 훈련을 실행했던 4세기 이집트 사막의 교부와 교모들을 통해 외적 정주와 내적 정주의 중요성과 그 의미를 각각 살펴볼 것이다. 셋째, 본 연구는 사막의 영성에서 강조되는 정주가 삶의 규칙, 자기응시, 지역성 회복의 세 측면에서 현대의 목회현장에서 적용되어야 함을 제안하고자 한다.
