Robert De Niro is an iconic actor in American Hollywood in the 1970s and 1980s. Moreover, he is a renowned actor in the American film industry and recognized for his acting creation as a film actor. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in “God Father II and an Academy Award for Best Actor” in “Raging Bull”. Moreover, he won numerous awards at other film festivals and has appeared in nearly 100 films, pursuing his acting career. Many actors go through a lot of analyses because they portray a variety of characters. Robert De Niro, in particular, goes through his own character creation and character formation process using his matchless Method acting, which even created a new acting concept, called “De Niro Approach.” Therefore, this study aimed to analyze cases focusing on films, in which he created characters through Method acting, emphasizing three aspects of his character creation process (i.e. character creating by observation, character construction by experience, and formation of a character’s external conditions through his “De Niro Approach”). Hope that the results of this study would be helpful for many researchers to understand Robert De Niro’s acting career or the character creation of Method acting. Performance is one of the oldest human artistic practices. It is not an exaggeration to say that all humans have DNA to act. Societies and cultures, such as sons, spouses, teachers, writers, etc, have defined individuals as diverse roles and humans have been educated to act according to their prescribed roles. We are acting and acting every day for the right behavior for each role. Therefore, movies and performances are closely related. Also, in the case of the non-verbal version, which is represented by the presenter, it is an extended performance movie format of Live Cinema which is a combination of cinema and performance.

로버트 드 니로는 1970년대에서 80년대 미국의 헐리우드 배우의 아이콘이자, 미국 영화산업 및 영화배우의 연기 창조에 있어 명실 공히 인정받는 배우이다. 그는 <대부 Ⅱ>(God Father Ⅱ)에서 아카데미 최우수 남우조연상, <성난 황소>(Raging Bull)에서는 아카데미 최우수 남우주연상을 수상하였고, 기타 영화제에서 다수의 부분에서 수상하였으며, 현재까지 약 100여편에 이르는 작품에 출연하며 연기인생을 펼치고 있다. 로버트 드 니로는 아메리칸 액팅 메소드(American Acting Method)의 선구주자라 할 수 있는 스텔라 애들러(Stella Adler)의 콘서바토리(Conservatory)에서 수학을 하였다. 이후 리 스트라스버그(Lee Strasburg)의 액터스 스튜디오(Actors Studio)에서 연기훈련을 진행하고, 이를 통해 “훈련된 배우”라는 칭호를 받으며 현재까지도 계속적으로 작품을 통해 자신만의 독보적인 인물로 표현한다. 많은 배우들이 다양한 인물을 표현하기 때문에 많은 분석의 과정을 거치고 있지만, 특히 로버트 드 니로는 ‘드 니로 어프로치’(De Niro Approach)라는 새로운 연기적 개념이 생겨날 만큼 돋보적인 메소드 액팅을 통해 그만의 인물창조 및 인물 형상화 과정을 거치고 있다. 그는 연기 창조의 방식에 있어 결과보다는 과정을 중요시 하고 있고, 순간순간의 집중을 통해 인물을 단순히 재현하거나 창조하는 것이 아니라 그 역할로 동화되고 흡수되는 연기를 펼친다. 그가 그만의 노하우로 인물을 창조하며 관객들에게 칭송 받을 수 있는 것은 인물창조의 전 과정에 있어 끊임없이 연구하고 노력하였기 때문이라고 사료된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 그의 인물 창조 과정을 관찰에 의한 인물 창조, 경험에 의한 인물 구축, 그의 ‘드니로 어프로치’를 통한 인물의 외적 조건 형성 등의 세 가지 측면을 중심으로 그가 실제로 연기했던 작품들 중 메소드 연기방식을 통해 인물창조를 한 작품을 중심으로 사례를 분석해 보고자 한다.
