Dokkaebi is a very interesting being which appears in Korean traditional tales. Regardless of their region or age, or whether they are intrinsically good or evil in their identity, if we were to just concentrate on their familiarity with the general public, they should certainly be well considered. However, it is not easy to conclude or define its characteristics despite the fact that everyone knows about its existence. This is because dokkaebi not only intrinsically possesses various significances as in supernatural ability and mystical nature but based on the special distinctions in traditional culture literature, it continuously generates and recreates its identity. Changes and alterations are made while it gets transmitted not being created by one author with specific characteristics. Therefore, it would be very tricky and challenging to say the least in exactly defining the dokkaebi’s origin or characteristics. However, there is grave concern that there would be distortion in the identity of the dokkaebi and their disintegration within the traditional literature due to those very ambiguous nature. Jeju’s case is also no exception. The number of people who revel in this particular genre is decreasing while old tales are being forcefully spoon-fed into the public by other media. This paper has attempted to draw interest and look into the special characteristics of the Jeju dokkaebi tales. If there is a distinctive characteristic that differentiates Jeju tales with other regions, it can be seen in the “Yeonggam Bonpullie” where the dokkaebi is deified. However, the region where this research is based on is limited while the amount of data that has been looked into was also small in number which makes the characteristics of the Jeju dokkaebi tales fragmentary rather than comprehensive but it is hoped that this paper would provide a new opportunity to reflect back on the Jeju dokkaebi tales.

도깨비는 우리 설화 가운데 등장하는 아주 흥미로운 존재다. 지역이나 연령에 관계없이 또한 그 정체성의 선량하고 사악함을 떠나서 친밀도에서만 살펴본다면 손에 꼽을 수 있다. 그것을 증명이라도 하는 듯이 최근에 우리 설화 속의 도깨비 를 발견하여 도깨비가 가진 신비감과 신통력을 보여주는 영상물을 제작하는 등 새로운 문학 해설이 이루어져서 많은 사람들에게 호응을 얻은 바 있다. 이처럼 도 깨비라는 존재에 대한 이해와 관심은 갑자기 생겨난 것이 아니라 그 존재감이 분 명하다. 그러나 누구나 알고 있는 그 존재의 성격을 확정짓는 것과 정의 내리는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 도깨비가 지닌 초자연적인 능력과 신비감으로 다양한 의 미를 내포하고 있을 뿐 아니라 설화문학이라는 장르 특성상 발생과 재창작이 이 뤄지기 때문이다. 특정 작가에 의해 만들어진 특정 캐릭터가 아니라 전승되는 가 운데 변화와 조정이 이루어진다. 따라서 도깨비의 어원이나 특성을 밝히는 일은 모호하고 까다로운 일일 것이다. 그러나 그런 모호한 특성으로 인해 설화문학 속 에서 도깨비의 정체가 왜곡되고 도깨비이야기가 소멸되어 가는 것이 아닌지 우려 된다. 제주도의 경우도 예외는 아니다. 설화의 향유층이 줄어들고 옛이야기들은 다른 매체를 통해서 일방적으로 주입되고 있기 때문이다. 이 글은 제주도 도깨비담의 특징을 탐색하는데 관심을 두고자 하였다. 다른 지역과 차별하여 큰 특징이라고 한다면 신격화되어 있는 이야기로서 <영감본풀이>류를 들 수 있다. 그리고 제주도 에서는 <도깨비 방방이 이야기> 유형의 이야기는 나타나지 않는다는 점이다. 도깨 비 방망이 이야기 속 도깨비는 실제로 만나기 어려운 허구이기도 하거니와 제주 도 도깨비담에는 영감신이 그러한 역할을 하고 있기 때문이기도 하다. 이 글의 자 료 조사의 범위가 한정되었고 탐색하는 자료의 수가 제한적이어서 제주도 도깨비 담의 특징이 포괄적이라기보다 단편적일 수 있지만 더 천착된 연구 결과는 다음 으로 미루려고 한다. 다만 이번 기회를 통해 제주도 도깨비담을 돌아보고 재발견 하는 계기가 되었으면 한다.
