The purpose of this paper is to conduct a comparative study between John Milton's Paradise Lost and the Paradise Regained, on the one hand, and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables with a focus on such sins of the Characters therein as the Original sin committed by Adam and the sin of Colonel Pyncheon, on the other hand. In addition, a comparison will be made on the state of mind Adam was in after he had committed the Original sin and the psychological state of the Clifford Who plays the role of Adam when Adam was kicked out of Eden, as depicted in the Nathanael Hawthorn's The House of the Seven Gables. According to Milton's salvation comes through Jesus Christ the Messiah, whereas based on a humanistic view Hawthorn narrates that through the woman named Phoebe light shines upon the dark house of the Pincheon's Estate, the lifeless Pincheon Garden turns into the Garden of Eden, and through the marriage between the two families who used to be in hostility peace is restored to them.

본 논문은 나다나엘 호손의 작품 『일곱박공의 집』과 존 밀톤의 작품 『실낙원』과 『복낙원』을 비교 연구하는데 그 목적을 둔다. 핀천 대령이 가난한 매튜 모올을 마법사로 몰아 처형하여 선악의 씨를 심고서 자손 대대로 저주 가 이어지는 것과 인류 최초의 사람 아담이 선악과를 먹고 온 인류에게 저주 를 물려준 것을 비교 연구 한다. 또한 에덴동산에서 추방된 아담의 영적, 심 리적, 정신적 상태와 제프리 삼촌을 죽였다는 누명을 쓰고 감옥 생활을 하고 나와서 불안과 고립과 소외를 느끼는 클리포드의 심리적 정신적 증상을 비교 연구한다. 다음으로 『복낙원』에서 어두운 곳에 빛을 비추고 죄악 세상에 생 명을 주고 신의 사랑을 전하러 오신 메시야와 호손이 이 작품에서 낭만주의 적 인본주의 관점에서 설정한 여성 인물 피비를 통하여 어두운 저택에 빛을 비추고 식물들이 시들어 있는 핀천 가든에 생명을 주고 에덴동산으로 회복시 키고 어둡고 음울한 저택에 생기를 주는 역할을 하며, 또한 조상의 억울하게 죽어 오랫동안 원한을 가지고 있던 청년 홀그레이브와 결혼함으로써 두 집안 이 화목하고 에덴이 회복되는 내용을 연구한다. 다시 말하면 아담이 선악과 를 먹고 에덴에서 추방 되었을 때의 수치심, 고립, 소외감, 갈등 고통과 이 작품에서 아담으로 묘사된 클리포드의 심리적 정신적 증상들 고립, 관계의 단절, 불안 등이 매우 유사하다. 그러나 문제의 해결은 밀턴은 신의 무조건 적인 사랑으로 해결하고 호손은 빛으로 묘사된 낭만주의적 인본주의 관점으 로 묘사된 여성인 피비의 사랑의 행동으로 고립과 관계의 단절과 불안의 증 상들이 해소되고 낙원이 회복된다.
