Jeju April 3 still remains incomplete in various aspects. First of all, this case occurred on April 3, 1948 from the starting point on March 1, 1947 and ended on September 21, 1954. However, since the truth of the case has not been clarified, this case was Genocide. On the Rjother hand, Jeju April 3 was concluded in December 2003 when the fact-finding report was published by the committed that had been formed pursuant to a special law announced on January 12, 2000 40 years after Jeju college students started fact-finding in May 1960. But as confirmed on the preface of the fact-finding report, the character of the case and historical evaluation are subject to the hands of historians. Consequently, Jeju April 3 was supposed to remain as dead memory of the term, Jeju April 3 Incident without sharing individual and collective memories with the character of Jeju April 3 unidentified. Based on this critical mind, this study reviewed and analyzed Jeju April 3 that has been examined in earnest since 1987 in the aspects of ‘Memorizing Subject’ and ‘Memorizing Method’. Through this, this study clarifies that the character and historical evaluation of Jeju April 3 are not the work of coming historians but that of ours.

제주 4‧3은 여러 면에서 아직 미완으로 남았다. 우선 이 일은 1947 년 3월 1일을 기점으로 하여 1948년 4월 3일에 발생하였고, 1954년 9월 21일에 끝났다. 하지만 그 진상이 규명되지 않았으므로 이때 끝난 사건은 제노사이드였다. 한편, 1960년 5월 제주대학생들이 진상조사 작업에 나선 이래 40년이 지난 2000년 1월 12일에 제정 공포된 특별 법에 의해 발족된 위원회의 진상보고서가 발간된 2003년 12월이 되어 제주4‧3사건은 일단락되었다. 하지만 이 진상보고서의 서문에서도 확인 되듯이 그 사건에 대한 성격이나 역사적 평가는 후세 사가의 몫으로 남 겨졌다. 따라서 제주4‧3은 그 성격이 규정되지 않은 상태로 개인기억과 집합기억이 공유되지 못한 채 제주4‧3사건이라는 용어로 죽은 기억인 역사에로 내몰리게 되었다. 이런 문제의식을 바탕으로 하여 이 연구에 서는 1987년 이후 본격적으로 연구되기 시작한 제주4‧3을 ‘기억하는 주체’와 ‘기억하는 방식’이라는 점에서 검토 분석하였다. 이를 통해 제주 4‧3의 성격이나 역사적 평가가 후세사가들이 아닌 우리의 몫이라는 점 을 분명히 하고자 한다.
