This study examines what the gender-marked items specifically refer to in song lyrics of hip-hop and country music using a corpus-based approach. It examined the four gender lemmas, GIRL, WOMAN, BOY, and MAN to discover differences in the use of the gender-marked items and examines the way males and females are portrayed. The results show that stereotypical representations of gender prevail in song lyrics, especially in hip-hop music suggesting that lyrics may be used as an authentic material that contains rich sociolinguistic information on gender representations for linguistic and cultural lessons.

본 연구는 미국의 힙합과 컨트리 노래 가사에서 남성과 여성 이 어떤 식으로 대표되는지를 코퍼스 분석을 통하여 고찰한 연 구이다. 여성을 의미하는 두 단어 GIRL, WOMAN과 남성을 의미 하는 BOY, MAN, 이 네 가지 단어가 노래 가사에서 어떻게 사 용되고 있고 여성과 남성을 표현하는 점에 있어 다른 점은 어떤 것이 있는지를 집중 분석하였다. 그 결과 두 성에 대한 표현이 정형화된 이미지로서 노래 가사에서 표현되고 있음을 알 수 있 었다. 이것은 특히 힙합 음악 장르에서 뚜렷하게 보여 지며, 따 라서 이 결과는 두 성의 대표적 이미지가 사회 언어적 현상을 반영하는 노래 가사에서 어떻게 표현되어 있는지에 대한 정보를 제공 한다. 또한, 이것은 하나의 사회 문화적 현상으로서 언어 학습에게도 유용한 사회 문화적 레슨이 될 수 있음을 암시하고 있다.
