Yinyi, the commentation types of the sound and meaning, is originally a term for traditional philology and it refers to the new trend in commentating since Wei and Jin era. As the books of sound and meaning show a tendency toward fanqie which is different from the rhyme books of the Qieyun tradition, they can play a complementary role with the rhyme books of the Qieyun tradition. And because of this function, they have important values to contribute to reconstructing the whole picture of middle Chinese era. Moreover, the Sanskrit-Chinese transliterations and the authentic Sanskrit-Chinese transliterations described in the books of sound and meaning of Buddhist sutra can be used as texts that help us get over the drawbacks of fanqie texts. When we compare those Chinese characters used in Sanskrit-Chinese transliterations with their counterparts in the original Sanskrit words, we can more closely infer how Chinese characters were pronounced in middle Chinese era. The descriptions on dialects in the commentations in the books of sound and meaning of Buddhist sutra such as Xuanyingyinyi or Yiqiejingyinyi are very much valuable materials in reconstructing the dialects in those days. When we study the names of the provinces referred in those descriptions and track how the relevant Chinese characters were pronounced in middle Chinese era, we can reconstruct demarcations and distributions of dialects in that era. If we make use of these values of the books of sound and meaning, we can more specifically understand the phonological system of middle Chinese.

음의는 본래 전통 훈고학의 술어로서 위진 시대 이후의 새로운 주석 경향을 지칭하는 말이다. 음의서는 절운계 운서와는 다른 반절 계통을 보여 주고 있어 중국어 중고 시대 음운 연구에 있어 절운계 운서 자료 와 상호 보완적인 역할을 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 중국어 중고 시대의 전체적인 모습을 재구성하는데 큰 기여를 할 만한 가치를 지니고 있다. 또한 불경 음의서를 중심으로 기술된 범한 역음과 정범음 자료들은 반 절 자료의 한계를 극복하게 해 주는 자료로 활용할 수 있는 가치가 있 다. 범한 역음에 활용된 한자와 원래 범어를 비교하면 보다 분명하게 중고 시대 한자의 발음을 추정해 낼 수 있을 것이다. .현응음의.나 .일 체경음의.등의 불경 음의서 주석에 나타나는 방언 기술은 당시 방언의 모습을 재구성해 낼 수 있는 가치 있는 자료이다. 방언 기술에 사용된 지역의 명칭을 살피고 또 관련 한자의 중고 시대 발음을 추적하면 당시 방언의 구획과 분포 양상을 재구성해 낼 수 있을 것이다. 음의서 자료 의 이와 같은 가치를 연구에 활용한다면 중국어 중고 시대의 음운 체계 를 더욱 상세하게 파악하게 될 것이다.
