In this paper, a cognitive process called attention distribution is dealt with. Talmy used the term ‘attention distribution’ instead of ‘windowing of attention’. He introduced the concept of an event frame to explicate the attention distribution, dealing with motion event-frame here. Finally, I investigate the difference of attention distribution between languages, under the assumption that just as one person of the one language puts his attention on the different aspects of a given situation, the speakers of different languages distribute their attention to the same scene. In the case that English/Germany and French/Spanish describe the motion event, they distribute their attention to the different elements of the motion event such as FIGURE, GROUND, MOTION, and PATH. Apparently, a satellite-framed language such as English is better suited for descriptions of MANNER and elaborate PATH descriptions including dynamic descriptions of locations along the PATH. The reasons are that in satellite-framed languages MANNER is often incorporated in the verb meaning, and the information on the PATH can be expressed in the same clause as the motion event by opening attentional windows. Since Spanish is a verb-framed language, descriptions of motion events tend to be restricted to the motion itself. Often the description of MANNER is only possible at the cost of extended and rather awkward constructions. Similarly, if details of the PATH are to be given, they are expressed in additional clauses.
