Young children delete some syllables or reduce multisyllabic words not randomly but in a systematic way. In their productions, unstressed, non-final syllables are deleted more frequently than stressed, word-final syllables. They also tend to produce a trochaic foot by deleting syllables or shifting stress. There have been prosodic approaches to children's syllable deletion (Koheo, 2001; Fikkert, 1995; Demuth, 1996). They suggest that children's outputs rely on a prosodic structure, a trochaic foot, so the syllables that do not fit the structure are omitted. Thus, giraffe /ʤəˈræf/, for example, is produced as [ˈræf]. Syllable deletion, however, appears not only in children's production but also in adult speech. We see that most cases of English aphesis and syncope concern unstressed non-final syllables. Based on these observations that stress and the position in a word plays a role in syllable deletion both in adult and children speech, we propose a hierarchy of syllables to be deleted. This hierarchy deals with both child word truncation and adult syllable deletion.

본 논문에서는 말을 배우는 단계에 있는 어린 영어화자들이 일부 음절을 생략하거나(syllable deletion) 다음절어를 축약하는 현 상(truncation)에 초점을 두고 음절생략과 강세의 패턴을 살피고자 한다. 아동들은 임의적으로 일부 음절을 생략하는 것이 아니라 비강세 음절이나 어말 음절의 생략 빈도수가 높게 나타난다. 또 한 어두 비강세음을 탈락하거나 음절 첨가 전략을 통해 강약으 로 발음하는 경향을 보인다. 이런 아동들의 음절탈락 현상에 대해 기존 선행 연구(Koheo, 2001; Fikkert,1995;Demuth,1996)에서는 아동들의 발화가 운율구조 (prosodic structure)에 의존적이며 강약격(trochee) 운각를 지키기 위 해 이에 맞지 않는 음절은 생략된다고 본다. 예를 들어 약강격 의 단어인 giraffe /ʤəˈræf/는 첫음절인 약음절이 탈락되고 [ˈræf]로 발음된다. 실제 음절탈락은 어린 화자들뿐만 아니라 성인 화자에게도 발 생하는 현상이다. 본 연구에서는 어린이들의 강세패턴을 살펴봄 과 더불어 영어의 어두 모음 소실과 어중음 소실의 예와 성인 영어화자의 음절탈락에 대한 통계적 데이터를 살펴보고 강세와 단어내 음절의 위치가 관여되어 있음에 주목한다. 궁극적으로 강세와 음절위치를 바탕으로 음절간의 계층관계를 가정하여 아 동의 단어축약과 성인들의 음절 생략에 대한 통합적 기술을 제공하고자 한다.
