The objective of this paper is to explore the way linguistic imperialism operates, and to understand what the possible behind-the-scene motivation is. Even behind well-intended teaching methods, they could be imbued with linguistic imperialism. This paper tries to reveal: First, there exist inequalities in power and resources between the Center nations and the Periphery nations, which makes the Periphery nations powerless in the face of the structuralism. Second, linguistic imperialism forces the Periphery nations to have no choice but to adopt English as a national language. Third, the Center nations use linguistic imperialism to control the Periphery nations.

본 논문의 목적은 언어제국주의가 어떻게 작용하는지 살펴보 고 언어 제국주의 이면에 내재하는 동기를 이해하는데 있다. 동 기 면에서 순수한 언어 교수법에도 언어제국주의가 스며있을 수 있다. 본 논문은 다음 세 가지를 드러내고자 한다. 첫째, 중심국가(the Center nations)와 주변국가(he Periphery nations) 사이에는 힘과 자원의 불균형이 존재함으로써 주변국가 는 중심국가가 만들어 놓은 거대한 구조 앞에서 무력해질 수 밖 에 없다. 둘째, 언어제국주의로 인해 주변국가는 어쩔 수 없이 영어를 공용어로 선택할 수 밖에 없다. 마지막으로, 중심국가는 언어제국주의를 이용해 주변국가를 통제하고 있다.
