On March 30, 1919, the independence movement of Dongmoon Market of Deoksandong district of the local distinguished scholars of the Donghwa Buddhist Temple on March 30, 1919 spread the Daegu’s 3․1 movement into a new phase. In addition, the 3․1 movement contributed to the development of all the national resistance. 1919년 3월 30일 동화사 지방학림의 덕산동 동문시장 만세독립운동은 서울의 불교계 주도의 만세독립운동의 확산 과정에서 전개되었다. 동화사 지방학림의 만세운동은 일제강점 이후 불교계와 동화사 주지의 친일화 경향에 대한 불교계의 성찰을 표출하는 것이었다. 동화사 지방학림의 승려들이 동화사를 떠나 대구부내 덕산동 동문시장의 장날을 이용하여 대규모 군중들과 함께 만세독립운동을 전개하였다. 한국의 독립을 ‘당연한 본무’로 간주하고, 만세독립운동에 대해 ‘기쁨을 이기지 못해 만세를 부른’ 것으로 이해하면서 만세독립운동을 전개하였다. 이를 계기로 대구의 3ㆍ1운동을 새로운 국면으로 확산시키고, 3ㆍ1운동이 전민족적 항쟁으로 발전하는데 기여하였다. 동화사 지방학림의 만세독립운동은 대구의 3ㆍ1운동의 중간 시점에 발생하여 대구의 3ㆍ1운동을 증폭시키는 가교 역할을 한 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 또한 1920년대 민족운동에서 불교의 역할과 의미를 강화하였다. 곧 동화사 지방학림의 만세운동은 불교계 역시 식민지 민족운동의 주체임을 인식하는 실천적 행동이었다.
