The Buddhist Cheon Do-jae is a rite for the Geuk rak wang sang (Born again in heaven) of a dead soul. And it is time to rethink the human life that is caused by death, and to share the dignity of human beings and the death to be faced in the future. And also Buddihist ceremony (Cheodojae) can be regarded as a time of enlightenment to educate the soul as a buddhist prayer to understand that the dead have become a ghost by explaining, and to console the soul. Recently, various traditional dances have been performed in Cheondojae. Why perform traditional dances that are not even in the Buddhist ritual process at Cheondojae? First, Korean traditional dance is a dance symbolized by the sentiment in mind. Second, Salpuri and Seungmu that Korea's representative folk dance, are life's dances to turn sadness into joy. Third, Korean dance has a strong sense of community. The dance of funeral rites has a ceremonial nature of suffering and enhances cooperation among the villagers. Forth, Korean dance aimed at educating human personality and emotions. On the other hand, traditional dances are still not expanding, and it is difficult to fill the seats in traditional dance venues. However, the traditional dance, which you can enjoy only when you visit the concert hall, can share your sorrow at a close distance with ordinary people who participate in the ritual. The dancer also dances for the soul's journey to heaven with a heart of mourning. As such, ordinary people who have encountered traditional dance in Cheondojae will be deeply moved by the traditional dance. Also, it is important that Buddhist ceremony (Cheondojae) is a healing process that can help family members smoothly live when they return to society and help them find a sense of stability in their minds. Cheon Do-jae is a festival place where we all cope with the fear of death in human life. As a festival like this, Cheon Do-jae will approach the public with traditional dance as a flower of funeral culture.

불교의 천도재는 영가의 극락왕생을 위한 의례이다. 천도재는 죽음으로 인해 발생되는 인간의 삶을 회상(回想)하며, 인간에 대한 존엄성과 미래에 맞이할 죽음에 대해 참회하는 시간이다. 또한, 천도재는 스님들의 집전 하에 염불로서 영가를 교육하고, 설명함으로서 고인이 된 망자(亡者)를 망자가 되었다는 상황을 이해시키며, 그 넋을 위로해 주는 깨달음의 시간이다. 최근 이러한 천도재에서 전통춤이 다양하게 추어지는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그렇다면, 천도재에서 불교 의례 절차에도 없는 전통춤을 추어지는 이유는 무엇일까? 첫째, 한국 전통춤은 마음에 담겨 있는 정서가 상징화된 춤이다. 둘째, 한국의 대표적인 민속춤인 살풀이춤과 승무는 슬픔을 환희로 전환하기 위한 삶의 춤이다. 셋째, 한국 춤은 공통체적 성격을 강하게 지닌다. 장례의식의 춤은 고통의 통과의례적인 성격을 지니면서 마을 사람들에게 협동심을 고취시킨다. 넷째, 한국 춤은 인간의 성정을 교화하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 한편, 전통춤은 아직도 저변확대가 되지 못하고, 전통춤 공연장의 객석을 채우기가 힘든 실정이다. 하지만, 공연장을 찾아가야 감상할 수 있는 전통춤이 재(齋)에 들어옴에 따라 일반인과 근접한 거리에서 슬픔을 공유할 수 있는 매개로 작용되고 있다. 천도재는 인간의 삶속에서 죽음이라는 두려움에 대해 우리 모두가 지혜롭게 대처하는 축제의 장이라고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 축제로서 천도재는 불교무용과 더불어 전통춤과 함께 장례문화의 꽃으로 자리 잡고 있다.
