A Study on Collaborative Characteristics of VR-based Dance Works : Focused on Overseas Cases

This study aims to explore the collaborative characteristics and new roles for choreographer in creating VR-based dance works as an interdisciplinary project. For this purpose, four recent dance practice made for VR was targeted; Dutch National Ballet's 'Night Fall', Alexander Whitley Dance Company's ‘Celestial Motion’, Prague-based independent digital artists Andrej Boleslavský & Mária Júdová's ‘Dust’, Martha Graham Dance Company's ‘Mantle’. These four dance works were premiered in 2016–2018 and created to develop new audience as a strategic challenge with the aid of immersive virtual reality technology. As results of the case study, this paper discusses a new paradigm of collaboration for producing dance works via cutting-edge technology such as VR. It also discusses the shift of choreographer’s role in creating VR-based dance work to design immersive experience for audience in collaboration with engineers, dance researchers, practitioners from the professional fields and VR corporations.
