The popular calligraphic style is a new trend in calligraphy that has emerged in China in recent years. However, this is not the fruit of efforts to create a new calligraphic style, but rather the result of a deliberate tactic to break away from the existing calligraphic style or find something different from it. Therefore, it is impossible to establish a unique and lasting system and therefore has the ultimate limitation of having to be routine. Ugly calligraphy emerged under the banner of the popular calligraphic style, the biggest problem with the ugly calligraphy is that academic theory is not supported. Also, most of today's ugly calligraphy goes against the nature of calligraphy. Because of the general tendency to value the weight of the traditionality of calligraphy, the current evaluation of the ugly calligraphy in China is not very favorable.

流行書風은 근년에 중국에서 나타난 서예의 새로운 동향이다. 그런데 이는 새로운 서체를 창조해 나가는 노력의 결실이 아니라 기존의 서체를 탈피 혹은 그것들과 다른 것을 찾겠다는 의도적 전술의 결과이다. 따라서 고유하고 지속적인 체계를 수립할 수 없으므로 일과적일 수밖에 없는 궁극적인 한계를 지닌다. 이러한 유행서풍의 기치 아래 醜書가 출현하였는데, 추서의 가장 큰 문제는 학문적 이론이 뒷받침되지 않는다는 점이다. 또한 오늘날의 醜書는 대부분 서예의 본질성에 어긋난다. 서예가 지닌 전통성의 무게를 중시하는 일반적 경향 때문에 당금의 醜書에 대한 중국 내 평가는 그다지 호의적이지 않다. 당금의 유행추서는 전통추서에서의 ‘拙’⦁‘逸’⦁‘醜’의 진정한 의미를 모를 뿐 아니라, 能格을 넘어서서 逸格에 이르는 수련과정을 소홀히 하고 있다. 이 점이 유행서풍에서의 醜書와 전통서풍에서의 醜書의 가장 큰 차이이다.
