This study applies a qualitative narrative approach to determine what Korean education means to 7 conscientious foreign workers who have been in South Korea for over 5 years. This study analyses data from telephone and in-depth interviews, as well as written material from a Korean language class. Structuring the individual language learning experiences, this analysis reveals patterns and core themes. The workers hoped to integrate in to Korean society, thus enabling them to invite family members to live in South Korea. Additionally, they have completed the Korean Immigration Integration Program(8hours per week) to meet in come standards. They have studied for the TOPIK(Test of Proficiency in Korean)II and have attempted to adapt to working life, Korean society and culture. Moreover, in the event that they fail to change their residency status, they have attempted to improve their Korean language abilities before returning to their home countries. For these workers, learning Korean represents the hope they will have their human rights respected, and be permitted to work and live with in Korean society. Since the Korean legal system allows them to stay in the country with a change of status, the Korean language instruction environment should be reviewed in general in order to more clearly communicate with native speakers, to ensure that language is a basic right. This is a significant first step toward a healthy multicultural society.

본 연구는 국내에서 5년 이상 체류하며 취업활동을 하고 있는 7명의 외국인 성실근로 자들의 한국어 교육이 갖는 의미를 질적 연구 방법 중 하나인 내러티브 연구로 접근하여 탐색하였다. 연구 참여자들과의 심층 인터뷰 전사 자료와 보충 전화 인터뷰 그리고 연구 자와의 한국어 수업 시간에 진행되어 온 쓰기 활동 자료를 분석하여 한국어 학습 경험이 갖는 의미들을 핵심 주제별로 구조화 시키는 작업을 통하여 숨겨진 의미들을 도출하였 다. 인터뷰 결과 외국인 성실근로자들은 한국 사회의 구성원으로 남길 바라고 있으며, 가족 초청을 통하여 안정적인 정주를 희망하였다. 또한 참여자들은 야근 및 토요일 근무 를 해야 하는 힘든 환경 속에서도 연간 소득 기준을 충족시키기 위해 매주 8시간의 사회 통합프로그램을 이수했다고 하였다. 한국어 향상을 위해 토픽(한국어능력시험)Ⅱ 공부 를 지속적으로 이어가고 있으며 이를 통해 직장 생활과 한국 사회·문화에 대한 성공적 인 적응을 도모하고 있다고 하였다. 부가적으로, 참여자들은 체류자격 변경에 실패 시, 본국 귀환에 대비하여 한국어 능력 향상에 힘쓰고 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 결론적으로 외국인 성실근로자들에게 한국어 능력은 한국 사회의 정주, 꿈을 이루기 위한 수단을 넘 어서서, 인간다운 삶을 살고자 하는 기본적 인권에 대한 외침이다. 한국 정부는 그들에 게 체류자격 변경을 통하여 국내에 정주할 수 있는 법적 환경을 마련해주었으므로, 이제 는 기본권으로서의 언어권을 보장하여 한국 모어 화자와의 원활한 소통이 이루어질 수 있도록 한국어 교육 환경에 대한 전반적인 검토가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 그것이 건강한 다문화 사회로의 정착을 위한 의미 있는 첫걸음이 될 것이다.
