This study examines and analyzes the works of Jimmie Durham, who objected to the characterization of an artist and artwork based on his/her racial or ethnic identity and sought to reveal the racism and otherization mechanisms that were rampant in the cultural sphere. He is regarded as a representative Native American artist who emerged in the midst of activism art in New York of the late 1980s. But he was strongly opposed to such a categorization on the grounds that the interpretation of his works should not be biased or limited by his identity. His works were instrumental in exposing the ulterior motives of the discourses that dominated American historical narratives and popular culture as well as laying bare the relationship between power and reappearance.
