This paper reviews how the battle of Jeonju Fortress is depicted in literature during the Donghak Farmers’ Revolution in 1894 to identify its historical meaning. To that end, the way the developments of the battle of Jeonju Fortress was depicted in literature that addresses Donghak Farmers’ Revolution was reviewed for each decade. The Jeonju Fortress battle can be reviewed by focusing on the following aspects: 1) Jenju Fortress during the early months of Donghak Farmers’ Revolution 2) Entry into the fortress without bloodshed 3) Battle of Jeonju Fortress 4) Qing-Japan war and Jeonju Peace Treaty 5) 2nd uprising and suppression of the Donghak Farmers 6) Donghak Farmers from Jeonju or Jeonju Fortress and their activities. All literary works depict the Battle of Jeonju as the starting point where although the core power was centered in Seoul, the Qing-Japan War frustrated many national movements, finally leading to the Jeonju Peace Treaty. Although limited in degree, through the Jeonju Battle gathering, a new world opened up for the mass. But with the victory by Japan in the Qing-Japan War, and the subsequent taking over of Gyeongbok Palace, Donghak Farmers rose again on September 18. The movement, however, was brought to its knees in Wugeumchi in Gongju, without being able to reach Seoul. This historical process was reflected on literary works, with the occupation of the Jeonju Fortress becoming the goal of the Donghak Farmers. A new world opened up with the Jeonju Peace Treaty. But at the time of the Donghak Farmers’ Revolution, despite there being many fights and uprisings, there were not many cases where major figures except for Bokryong Lee, a young fighter, who were depicted as a protagonist in novels.

이 연구의 목적은 1894년 동학농민혁명 시기에 전주성 전투가 문학작품에어떻게 형상화 되는지 양상을 살펴, 그 역사적 의미를 밝히는 데 있다. 이를위해 동학농민혁명 시기 전주성 전투의 전개 양상을 살펴보고 동학농민혁명을 소재로 한 문학작품에 ‘전주성 전투’라는 역사적인 사건이 어떻게 형상화되었는지 연대 별로, 그리고 전주출신 동학교도를 고찰한다. 연구 내용은 1) 동학농민혁명 초기의 전주성 2) 무혈입성 3) 전주성 전투 4) 청일전쟁과 전주화약 5) 2차 봉기와 동학농민군 토벌 6) 전주 출신 동학농민군 활동 등 시기 별 활동 양상과 전주 출신 인물들의 활약으로 고찰할 수 있다. 동학농민혁명과 전주성 전투 전개 양상과 동학농민혁명을 소재로 한 문학작품과 전주성 전투 양상을 고찰했다. 모든 문학작품은 전주성을 교두보로지배 권력의 핵심인 서울을 향했지만 청일전쟁으로 좌절되었고, 전주화약이이뤄졌다. 비록 제한적이었지만 전주성 집강소를 통해 대중들의 꿈이던 대동 세상을 열었다. 그러나 청일전쟁에서 승리한 일제의 경복궁 침탈 사건으로 동학농민군은 9월 18일을 기해 다시 일어났지만 서울을 향한 동학농민군의 열망은 공주 우금치에서 좌절되었다. 이 같은 역사적 과정은 일정하게 문학작품에 투영되었다. 전주성 점령은 동학농민군의 목표 점이었고, 전주화약으로 대동 세상을 열었다. 그렇지만 동학농민혁명 당시 전주 출신 동학농민군의 투쟁활동이 많았지만 소년 장수 이복룡 외에 이들의 행적에 대해서는 다뤄지지 않았다.
