America is a nation comprised of citizens from varied cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Although Art therapy has predominantly been explored and advanced via Eurocentric perspectives, there is a growing body of art therapists who believe in approaches to the field that adequately represent the cultural values of America’s diverse population. As a result, studies have been generated to investigate the value of multicultural approaches to the art therapeutic process. This presentation will introduce the concept of Culturally Oriented Art Therapy via the research of American Art therapist of varying ethnic backgrounds. It will postulate the ways in which Korean Art therapy is a prominent example of how effective the cultural approach to art therapy can be. Furthermore, it will explore the importance of integrating the notion that cultures, races, and ethnicities deserve special acknowledgement of their differences within the field of Art therapy in both the American and Korean contexts.
