새로운 남북 정상의 만남은 평화통일공감대 확산을 통한 통일교육의 기초를 단단히 만들었다. 남북 정상들의 만남으로 인해 통일공감대 확산 문제는 우리의 삶 속으로 들어오게 되었다. 이로 인해 평화적 토대에 바탕을 둔 기본적 통일지향성을 고려하는 통일 시민을 육성하는 새로운 전기가 마련되었다. 이에 새 시대에 알맞은 평화통일 교육은 그동안 통일교육의 비판적 실천과 평화교육적 연계성과 차이성을 유의하면서 통일지향적 인간상을 구축하여야 한다. 평화와 통일을 그 중심축으로 삼아 우리의 평화통일교육은 그동안의 평화교육과 통일교육이 갖고 있는 다양한 시도에 대해 공통점을 찾아야 한다. 이러한 의미에서 올바른 지향점을 갖는 평화와 통일을 구현하는 통일교육을 정착 발전시킬 필요성이 요청된다.
