North Korea's distance learning was introduced to adults via postal service in the 1940's and has evolved into a form of e-learning that we are currently reviewing. North Korea emphasizes the development of a science and technology powerhouse and is making an effort to cultivate creative talents to lead in the knowledge economy era. Vocational education that have practical applications and remote education for adults are being delivered by the emphasis on modernization of education. In this paper, we analyzed education contents, standards, and infrastructure among 8 components of educational informatization, and discussed the stage of distance education in North Korea. Due to the secretive nature of the North Korean regime that does not interact with the outside world, the status of distance education in North Korea and its related technology sectors are unknown. Therefore, this paper focuses on informing North Korea on the status of distance education and also suggests areas that can be utilized through distance education in inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation projects.

북한의 원격교육은 1940년대 성인을 대상으로 하는 우편교육으로 시작하여 현재 우 리가 받고 있는 이러닝의 형태로 진화하였다. 북한은 과학기술강국건설을 강조하며 지식경제시대를 주도해 나갈 수 있는 창조형 인재들을 양성해가려는 노력을 하고 있 으며, 이에 따라, 지식경제 시대에 새로운 지식을 습득해야 한다는 재교육, 평생교육 이 강조되고 있다. 교육의 현대화, 정보화, 첨단화를 강조하며, 주로 실무에서 활용할 수 있는 직업교육이나 성인대상의 원격교육이 활성화되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 교육정보화 8개의 구성요소 중에서 교육컨텐츠, 표준, 인프라 3개 요소 를 분석, 평가하여 북한의 원격교육이 각각 어느 단계에 있는지 논의하였다. 외부와 교 류를 하지 않는 북한정권의 특성상, 북한의 원격교육현황이나, 관련된 기술현황이 외 부에 많이 알려져 있지 않다. 따라서 이 논문은 북한의 원격교육 현황을 알려주는 데 집중하였으며, 또한, 남북교류 협력 사업에서 원격교육을 통해서 활용될 수 있는 분야 를 아이디어 차원에서 제시하였다.
