As stripes have become a major fashion trend in recent years, this study was conducted to present a wide range of ideas and directions for fashion design by evaluating the expressions of stripes according to the application range of stripe, line shape, line direction, repetition pattern, way of arrangement, and expression technique in fashion design. 5,913 items in 4,733 outfits of striped fashion design from 2014 S/S to 2017 S/S fashion collections were collected to analyze expression aspects of stripes and to suggest how to adapt them into new fashion design. The results are summarized as follows. The proportion of striped outfits to the entire collection showed continual increase according to S/S or F/W season. The percentage of striped items was ranked in the order of one-piece dress(25.22%), skirt(16.42%), shirt/blouse(15.47%), pants(12.21%), jacket/coat(11.23%), and etc. Fully striped design(87.37%), straight line(82.70%), horizontal direction(45.31%), regular repetition(86.32%), single arrangement (83.24%), and weaving technique(34.30%) had the higher percentage in each factor of analysis. One-piece dress was the item that showed the highest usage of stripes regardless of seasons and that applied the most various expressions of stripes. Based on these results, application methods of stripes to create diversity in fashion design were suggested in three aspects. First, it is possible to develop a design that affects the optical illusion of the human body structure and the clothing space by changing line shape, line direction, and repetition pattern of stripes. Second, fashion design with a visual effect of clarity or complexity can be developed by switching figure-ground relationship of the stripes according to the application range, repetition pattern, and the arrangement of stripes. Third, it is possible to create a design with a difference in visual texture by defining the surface structure of the stripe using various expression techniques such as decorative details or trimming.

이 연구는 최근 몇 년간 강력한 패션 트렌드 중 하나로 부상한 스트라이프 패션의 표현 양상을 고찰하여 패션디자인을 위한 폭넓은 아이디어와 방향성을 제시하기 위해 수행되었다. 2014년 S/S에서 2017년 S/S까지 밀라노, 뉴욕, 런던, 파리 컬렉션에서 스트라이프를 사용한 4,733개 스타일, 5,913개 아이템을 수집하여 스트 라이프의 적용 범위, 선 모양, 선 방향, 반복 형태, 패턴 배치, 표현기법에 따른 표현 양상을 분석하였고, 시각 효과에 근거하여 패션디자인에서 활용 방안을 제시하였다. 분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. F/W보다 S/S 시즌에 스트라이프의 활용도가 높은 가운데, 시즌에 따라 스트라이프를 사용한 스타일의 구성비는 2014년에 서 2017년까지 꾸준히 증가 추세를 나타냈다. 스트라이프의 활용비가 높은 아이템은 원피스 드레스(25.22%), 스커트(16.42%), 셔츠/블라우스(15.47%), 팬츠(12.21%), 재킷/코트(11.23%)의 순으로 분석되었다. 스트라이프 의 표현 양상은 분석 항목별로 특정 요소가 지배적인 경향을 나타내고 있지만, 전체 적용(87.37%), 직선 형태 (82.70%), 가로 방향(45.31%), 규칙적 반복(86.32%), 단일 배치(83.24%), 위빙(34.30%)을 사용하는 비율이 높았 다. 원피스 드레스는 시즌과 관계없이 가장 높은 스트라이프 활용도를 나타내었고, 표현 양상에서도 가장 다양성을 보이는 아이템으로 분석되었다. 분석 항목과 관련지어 시각적으로 디자인 변화를 유도할 수 있는 스트라이프 활용 방안을 다음 세 가지 측면에서 논의하였다. 첫째, 스트라이프의 선 모양, 선 방향, 반복 형태 를 변화시킴으로써 의복 공간의 축소와 확장, 인체구조의 강조와 파괴 등 착시효과를 유도, 의복의 형태 지각 에 변화를 주도록 디자인할 수 있다. 둘째, 스트라이프의 적용 범위, 반복 형태, 패턴 배치에 따라 스트라이프 의 전경과 배경의 시각적 역할을 변화시키고, 이에 강조와 균등, 명료성과 복잡성의 시각효과를 지닌 디자인 으로 변주할 수 있다. 셋째, 풍부한 시각적 재질감을 형성할 수 있도록 장식 디테일이나 트리밍을 활용한 스트라이프의 다양한 표현기법을 적용함으로써 스트라이프의 시각적 움직임과 착시효과를 활용하면서도 일 반적인 스트라이프가 주는 단순함, 명료함의 이미지를 넘어 변화롭고 흥미 있는 시각효과를 지닌 디자인 개 발이 가능하다. 이 연구는 방대한 패션디자인 사례를 분석하여 스트라이프의 표현 양상을 체계적으로 분석해 보았으나, 연구에서 제외된 스트라이프 패션의 색채 활용, 감성적 측면에서 스트라이프 패션의 이미지에 대 한 분석은 후속 연구로 제안한다.
