초록

영어

Zainichi Korean films, which started with postwar newsreels and documentary films, lost their own independent voice for a long time due to the barrier of professionality in films. This is because the Zainichi Korean society had limited technology, human resources, and capital to focus on films and the community had to concentrate on typed texts such as newspapers and magazines to carry on their culture. Furthermore, as the ‘political’ environment became more inflexible with the establishment of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, the domain of expression was blocked rapidly and films became a backburner in the cultural activities of Zainichi Korean society. This niche market led to the emergence of Japanese directors who started sending crucial messages to the Japanese society through independent film production. Major directors such as Nagisa Oshima drew their attentions to Zainichi Koreans to shed light on the distorted history and reality of modern Japan. From their perspective, the Zainichi Korean society was not one of the dark sides created by the postwar Japanese society but was rather a symbolic existence of many contradictions in modern and contemporary Japanese history that many of its people have neglected. Meanwhile, Zainichi documentary films created by the early Zainichi Korean organization started sending independent viewpoints with the emergence of many individual Zainichi Korean filmmakers in the 1980s, who had built their film class under conscious Japanese documentary film directors. An environment to produce, distribute, and consume small nonmainstream films also expanded with the increase of theaters. Such trend also led to the emergence of Zainichi film dramas in the 1990s and Zainichi Korean film boom after the 2000s, showing that present󰠏day Zainichi Korean films now go through changes and innovations for more various, unique expressions in both documentaries and film dramas.
