This study presents the way on how to exalt the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice for the student soldiers in the Yeosoo and Sooncheon area who participated in the battle of Hwagae during Korean War, and to make the battlefield into a security theme park. Especially, the spirit of devotion to Korea and people that high teen students volunteered for student soldiers to save their country in urgent crisis deserves recognition of the future generations. Therefore, this study mentions historical background that many students in Yeosoo and Sooncheon volunteered for students soldiers. And it examines process of establishing student soldier organizations overcoming all the unfavorable conditions only with the spirit and braveness of saving their mother country, and analyzes unfolding process of Hadong battle. Especially, it reconstructs the process of pre-battle in detail between the student soldier company and the 1st regiment, the 6th division of North Korean Army at Hwagae market site on the basis of all available material. The study reestimates the meaning of the follow on battle at Jinju and Haman by pursuing the student soldiers battle process. The paper presents the way on how to make Hwagae market area a security theme park in detail so that people can remember their noble spirit and the fierce battle. The Hwagae market site is known as a tourist attraction, and a lot of tourists visit the site every year. By using the characteristics of this area, the paper illustrates the necessity of making security theme park that not only exalts the sacrifice of student soldiers during the Korean War, but also provides tourists with rest area. For the next phase, it argues that 'Yeosoo and Sooncheon Student Soldiers Memorial Hall' should be constructed at the fierce battlefield area in the Hwagae market site to show people activities of student soldiers and the Korean War in reality after securing various related remains and space for the facilities.

본 논문은 6·25전쟁 당시 화개전투에 참전한 여수·순천지역 학도병들의 애국심과 희생정 신을 선양하고 그 전적지를 안보테마 공원화하는 방안을 제시하고 있다. 특히 10대 후반의 어린 청소년들이 존망의 위기에 처한 조국 대한민국을 구하고자 자원하여 학도병에 지원한 애국애족정신은 후세에 널리 선양되어야 마땅하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 여수·순천지역에서 많은 학생들이 자발적으로 학도병으로 지원하게 된 시대적 배경을 우선적으로 언급하고 있다. 또한 열악한 여건 속에서도 오직 조국을 구하 겠다는 젊은 패기와 용기만으로 모든 악조건을 극복하고 학도병이 운용되는 과정을 살펴보 고 이어서 하동전투의 실상을 분석하였다. 특히 1950년 7월 25일 오전, 하동전투의 전초전 으로 화개장터에서 북한군 제6사단 제1연대와 학도병 중대간의 전투과정을 제반 자료를 근 거로 세밀하게 재구성하였다. 뒤이어 벌어진 진주와 함안에서의 학도병들의 전투과정을 추 적하여 그 의미를 재평가하였다. 또한 이와 같은 학도병들의 치열했던 전투과정과 그들의 숭고한 정신을 국민들이 널리 기 억할 수 있도록 화개장터 전적지의 안보공원화 방안을 본 논문에서는 구체적으로 제시하고 있다. 즉 현재 관광명소라는 지역특성과 잘 연계하여 우선적으로 관광객들의 휴식공간 제공과 동시에 학도병들의 희생을 선양할 수 있는 안보테마 공원조성이 필요성을 언급했다. 그 다음 단계로 6·25전쟁 상황과 학도병들의 활동상을 실증적으로 국민들에게 보여줄 수 있는 ‘여수·순천 학도병기념관’을 화개장터 격전지 현장에 건립할 것을 본 논문은 제시하고 있다.
