With civilizations developing rapidly, the modern world is confronted with diverse social problems such as an ageing population and environmental issues. As society is changing with the years members of society are also becoming more and more self-centered, and the lack of communication with family is getting worse; it has led to family breakdowns where it’s actually hard to expect a family to function. Along with this change, our society is overflowing with individualism that came with capitalism throughout the industrial age, and there has emerged a variety of problems where human values are decried materially. Given this reality, there were moves to deal with these social issues in the theatrical world, and many plays have been produced in various ways to tell of them. Plays reflect the spirit and the social aspects of the times, so this medium performs the educational and social functions allowing audiences to look back on social problems and lives of the age. Accordingly, directors are advised to appreciate the importance of such functions and have a correct understanding of social aspects the work talks about and what the author suggests. 《Death of a Salesman》, the focus of this paper, depicts conflicts and tragedies of ‘Willy’ who is an ordinary citizen living in the material world that came as the evil of capitalism. He found the reason of the conflicts and tragedies he had to suffer in the society and his family. Focusing on the events and troubles between the protagonist and his family, 《Death of a Salesman》 criticizes the wrong values of the modern society that the audience could catch and features the tragedy average citizens of modern times are undergoing due to the lack of communication based on family troubles. This study is aimed at studying the role of plays as a medium reflecting social problems by analyzing and examining directors’ approach method of 《Death of a Salesman》 while focusing on the process of staging and presenting the play. I hope this paper can be reference materials for directors who will give a production of 《Death of a Salesman》.

시대가 흐를수록 변화하는 사회의 흐름에 사회의 구성원들은 점점 더 개인중심주의적으로 변모하고 있으며, 이에 기인한 가족 간의 소통의 부재는 심화되고 있으며, 이는 가족의 붕괴로까지 연결되어 사실 상 그 기능을 제대로 수행 하지 못하고 있다. 이와 더불어 산업화 시대를 거쳐 자본주의로 발생한 개인 주의의 팽배로 인하여 인간의 가치를 물질적으로 매도하는 문제점들도 부각되어지고 있다. 연극계에서는 이러한 사회 문제를 다루고자 하는 움직임이 있었으며 이를 소재로 다루는 연극들이 다 양하게 제작되어지고 있다. 연극은 시대적 정신 및 사회성을 반영하고 있으며, 이러한 연극의 특징은 관 객들에게 그 시대의 사회적 문제점과 삶을 되돌아 볼 수 있게 해주는 교육적, 사회적인 기능을 수행하게 만드는 매체가 될 수 있다. 연극의 기능 중 사회적 특성을 반영하는 본 논문의 텍스트인 아서 밀러의 《세일즈맨의 죽음》은 자 본주의 폐단인 물질만능주의 속 사회에서 살아가는 평범한 시민인 주인공 ‘윌리’가 겪는 갈등과 비극을 다룬 작품이다. 그는 자신이 겪는 갈등과 비극의 원인을 사회와 가정에서 찾는다. 아서 밀러는 《세일즈 맨의 죽음》에서 주인공 윌리가 겪는 사건을 중심으로 현대사회의 잘못된 가치관에 대한 비판과 더불어 가족 간의 갈등으로 인한 소통의 부재로 고통 받는 평범한 소시민인 현대인의 비극을 다루고 있다. 이에 작품 속 주인공 ‘윌리’를 통하여 아서 밀러의 비극 개념과 희곡의 시대적 배경을 고찰하고 그 인물의 성 격 구축 과정, 관계 및 갈등을 공연에 실제적으로 어떻게 반영할 수 있는지를 고찰해보고자 한다.
