This research aims to analyze Rev. Seok-Gu Shin’s argumentation of ekklesia(ἐκκλεσία) and religiosity in his “Christianity and Missions”. This text is based in Matthew 16:16-18 and 28:19-20. In order to analyze Shin’s argumentation of ekklesia and religiosity, I searched for this text which was published in Jonggyogyeoi Jemyeongsa Gangyeonjip(1922). In chapter 2, I attempted to explain the basic motives of the perennial vitality of church such as the origin of church based on God’s absolute will, true communication(revelation) between God and human beings, eternal salvation based on the gospel truth, the clear purpose of the church planting, the passionate devotion of the church leaders, and so forth. In chapter 3, I treated with the essential elements of the true church such as Peter’s confession based on Matthew 16:16, the concept of Christians as ‘the congregation’ based on religious view, deep faith as ‘internal combustion’ and holy life as ‘external extension’, and so on. In chapter 4, I concentrated on practical paradigms for ‘prayer’ and ‘evangelism’. Shin laid great emphasis on prayer and evangelism with a genuine belief in practice of Christian faith. Because he believed that the future of Korean church is in the hands of the Almighty. In addition, I suggest future extensions of this research into Seok-Gu Shin’s other views of ‘the missions of Christianity’ such as ‘Christian faith and national evangelism’, ‘Christian faith and save-the-nation movement ’, ‘Christian missions and reforming spirit’, and so on.

이 연구의 목적은 신석구 목사의 글 “基督敎와 使命”에 나타난 에클레시아(ἐκκλεσ ία)와 종교성 논증을 분석하려는 데 있다. 그는 마태복음 16장 16절부터 18절, 28장 19절부터 20절까지의 말씀을 본문으로 설정하여 이 글을 작성했다. 이 연구에서는 신 석구가 논한 에클레시아와 종교성 논증을 분석하기 위해 『宗敎界 諸名士 講演集』 (1922)에 수록된 “基督敎와 使命”을 고찰했다. 제2장에서는 신석구가 주장하는 교회의 항존적(恒存的) 생명력에 대한 기초적 동 인이 무엇인지에 대해 살폈으며, 그 요소들로서 하나님의 절대적 의지에 바탕을 둔 교회의 기원, 하나님과 인간 사이의 참된 소통(계시), 복음의 진리에 기초된 영원한 구원, 교회설립의 분명한 목적, 교회 지도자들의 열정적인 헌신 등을 논했다. 제3장에서는 마태복음 16장 16절에 기초된 베드로의 신앙고백, 그리스도인들을 종 교적 관점에서 회중(congregation)으로 인식하는 개념, 내연(內燃)으로서의 깊은 신앙 과 외연(外延)으로서의 거룩한 삶 등을 중심으로 참 교회의 본질적 요소들이 무엇인 지를 다루었다. 제4장에서는 ‘기도’와 ‘복음전파’라는 실천적 패러다임을 설정하고 이 점에 중점을 두어 고찰했다. 신석구는 기독교신앙을 실천하고자 하는 확고한 신념으로 기도와 복 음전파를 강조했다. 왜냐하면 그는, 한국교회의 미래가 전능하신 하나님의 손 가운데 달려 있다고 믿었기 때문이다. 부연하여, 본 연구자는 향후 신석구의 기독교사명과 관련된 연구가 더욱 확장되어 이 주제의 연장선상에서 ‘신앙과 민족복음화’, ‘신앙과 구국운동’, ‘기독교사명과 개혁정 신’ 등 다양한 연구주제로 연계될 수 있기를 기대한다.
