Christian theology has maintained its methodology that applies the theoretical contents from the scripture and various texts to practical context. However, this way of how to do theology produced a unflexible understanding on theology by aiming to a problematic homogeneity and it has been related to a malfunction that prohibits incorporative works in the realm of theology. This studies begins from a critical perspective against such an exclusively hierarchical methods, which mean an attitude to a respectful mind in diverse traditions based on a diachronic viewpoint. So this study does not include a holistic denial of previous academic achievements and pursue a collateral stance that provides a creative and ethical tendency for the further theological exploration. From the above assumption, this study deals with the mutual relationship between the population change and its effects to spiritual formation. For this purpose, its concern includes the extensive eras from the Old and New Testament to the contemporary Korea to summarize this study’s primary concern. If possible, this academic concern will function as the stimulus for the same concern for the future society where various thoughts, such as postmodernism, pluralism, and secularism, are prevailing. In this aspect, this study is not limited to a simple access about spirituality but a creative challenge for the contemporary Christian theology as a whole.

기독교 신학은 성경과 여러 문서들에 근거한 가설을 통해 이론과 명제를 정립한 후 그 내용을 현실에 적용하는 방식을 오랫동안 고수했다. 그러나 이런 방식은 신학 의 발현과 전개에 대한 무리한 일원화를 추구함으로써 경직된 신학 이해를 양산했을 뿐 아니라, 다양한 신학 주제들을 특정한 범주 안에 한정하는 결과를 통하여 상호 교 차나 융합과 같은 창의성 발현의 가능성을 원천적으로 차단하는 부작용을 종종 초래 했다. 본 연구는 그와 같은 연역적 위계질서와 배타적 연구방법론에 대한 비판의식으 로부터 시작했다. 물론 비판의식이라는 표현은 지금까지의 모든 연구 결과와 방법론 의 전면적인 폐기를 의도하지는 않는다. 온고지신(溫故知新)이라는 고사성어가 암시하 듯, 혁신으로 불릴만한 급격한 변화조차 과거로부터 전래된 내용의 통시적 모음임을 긍정하기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구는 지금까지의 모든 신학 방법론을 부정하는 의도 를 내포하지 않으며, 신학의 각 영역을 유기적인 연장선으로 포용하는 동시에 이론과 실제의 올바른 융합을 통한 창의성과 도전적인 경향을 신학적 사고 전반에 제공할 것을 지향한다. 이와 같은 취지를 바탕으로 본 연구는 기독교 역사 속에 나타난 인구변동과 연관 된 영성 형성 가능성을 논의한다.2) 이를 위해 본 연구는 초대교회와 중세 그리고 종 교개혁 시대의 기독교 발전과정을 인구변동 측면에서 살펴보고, 인구변동과 초기 교 회의 상호관계로부터 형성된 영성형성에 담긴 시대적 정황을 개략적으로 정리한다. 그리고 그를 통해 영성 형성이라는 과정에 특정 개인과 신성의 접촉 외에 그 시대의 고유한 역사적 맥락과 사회적 과제들이 포함되는 논리적 개연성을 탐구한다. 포스트 모더니즘으로 인한 다원화 및 세속화 등과 더불어 4차 산업혁명으로 촉발된 새로운 문명의 도래가 기독교 신학자들에게 그동안 접하지 못한 낯선 도전을 던지는 실정을 감안할 때, 본 연구는 단순히 영성과 관련된 연구라는 지엽적 차원을 넘어 기독교 신 학 전반에 자극을 던지는 역할을 지향한다.
