Physical geography focuses on the interaction of nature and human, and its purpose is to observe spatial distribution of phenomena. Therefore, soil geography which is a branch of physical geography deals with the influences of soil on how humans live and their relics. Also, it deals with the influences of human activity on soil. This paper identifies the soil around Xi’an and explains how human have used such natural environment to create relics focusing on the former. Xi’an is located in the center of the Guanzhong plain which consists of alluvium by the river and it is in a loess area consisting of loess plateau and Huabei plain. This paper shows that Chinese people created relics such as The Terracotta Warrior, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and Fortifications of Xi’an using loess around there through the results of previous studies and findings and what our team saw at Xi’an.

자연지리학은 자연과 인간의 상호작용에 초점을 맞추고, 현상의 공간적 분포를 관찰하는데 목적을 둔다. 그러므로 자연지리학의 한 분과인 토양지리학은 토양이 인간의 생활양식과 문물에 끼친 영향, 그리고 인간의 활동 이 토양에 미친 영향을 다룬다. 본고는 전자에 초점을 맞추어 답사 지역인 중국 시안과 시안 주변 지역의 토양을 파 악하고, 인간이 어떻게 그러한 자연환경을 이용하여 문물을 만들어왔는지를 설명한다. 시안은 지리적으로 하천의 충적작용에 의해 형성된 관중 평원의 중앙부에 위치하며, 시안 일대는 황토 고원과 화베이 평원으로 이루어진 황토 지대이다. 본고에서는 과거 중국인들이 시안 일대에 분포한 황토를 활용하여 진시황병마용갱, 대안탑, 시안 성벽 등의 문화유산을 만들어내었음을 선행연구와 답사에서 관찰하고 발견한 결과를 통해 밝힌다.
