The purpose of this study is to analyze symbols and meanings revealed in Kim En Joong 's work, called 'Painter of Light'. The reason for paying attention to Kim En Joong 's works in this research is that, as revealed in the autobiographical writings of the artist, the deep symbolic meaning is contained in each of his works filled with light. His works play a role in healing human pain and suffering to a new level. This study serves as a preliminary work to analyze his work pursuing the essential meaning of human being as a case of ‘Logotherapy’. He has his own unique artistic world through bold attempts at newness. In addition to using free forms and brilliant colors, Kim En Joong creates works in a very unconventional way in that he leaves more than half of the screen as white empty space. In his work movement is a symbol of life. Freedom beyond boundaries and frameworks also extends to the freedom of the soul, which is completely out of the abstraction of language, civilization, custom, community, or group, that is, the beautiful inner freedom of man. Kim En Joong does not hang on any particular trend in the contemporary art world. He reminds the modern man of what he has lost by expressing the broadness and freedom to embrace the world and the universe. His work, which symbolizes "the beauty of creation and the beauty of the Creator," is defined as "Christian humanism." That he observes nature and paints it is not for enjoying beauty but for capturing and expressing the life force in it, the Creator's hand. By affirming human existence and discovering the beauty and essential value of nature surrounding him, he overcomes atheistic existentialism and nihilism.

본 연구는 ‘빛의 화가’로 불리는 김인중의 작품에 드러난 상징과 의미분석을 위한 것이다. 본 연구에서 김인중의 작품에 주목하는 이유는 작가의 자전적 수필집과 시편 묵상집 등에서도 드러나듯, 빛으로 충만한 그의 작품 하나하 나에 깊은 상징적·종교적 의미가 담겨있으며, 결과적으로 그의 작품들은 인간의 아픔과 고통을 새로운 차원으로 승화시키는 치유의 역할을 하기 때문이다. 본 연구는 인간의 궁극적 의미를 추구하는 그의 작품을 ‘로고테라피’의 사례로 분석하기 위한 사전작업의 성격을 띠고 있다. 그는 새로움을 향한 과감한 시도를 통해 자신만의 독창적인 예술세계를 펼치고 있다. 김인중은 자유로운 형태와 빛나는 색채를 사용할 뿐 아니라, 화면의 절반 이상을 흰색의 빈 공간으로 남겨둔다는 점에서도 매우 파격적인 방식으로 작품을 제작한다. 그의 작품에서 움직임은 살아있음, 즉 생명을 전제로 한다. 또한, 경계와 틀을 벗어나는 자유로움은 언어, 문명, 관습, 공동체 또는 집단이라는 추상적 개념을 완전히 벗어난 영혼의 자유로움, 즉 인간의 아름다운 내적인 자유라는 메시지로 확장된다. 김인중은 현대 미술계의 어느 특정한 흐름에 매달리지 않고, 세상과 우주를 끌어안는 폭넓음과 자유로움을 표현함으로써 현대인이 잃어버린 것을 일깨워 준다. “창조의 아름다움(beauté de la Création)과 창조주의 아름다움(beauté de Créateur)”을 형상화한 그의 작품은 ‘그리스도교적 휴머니즘’으로 정의할 수 있다. 그가 자연을 관찰하고 그리는 이유는 단순히 자연의 표피적 아름다움을 즐기기 위한 것이 아니라, 그 안에 있는 생명력, 즉 창조주의 손길을 포착하고 그것을 표현하기 위한 것이다. 인간의 존재를 긍정하고 그를 둘러싼 자연의 아름다움과 본질적 가치를 발견함으로써 그는 무신론적 실존주의와 허무주의를 극복한다.
