The purpose of this study is to analyze writing activities found in elementary school English textbooks. A total of six 5th and 6th grade English textbooks were selected and their writing activities were analyzed to determine their writing types, writing genres, writing games and their level of reflection in achievement standards. The results of the study indicated that, firstly, most of the writing activities appeared suitable based on the achievement standards of the 2009 revised National Curriculum. Second, the most frequent type of writing was ‘controlled writing,’ followed by ‘guided writing’ and ‘free writing.’ Third, various types of genres were incorporated into the activities, and ‘personal writing’ was the most frequent writing activity, ‘social writing’ was the second, and ‘academic writing’ was the third. Lastly, most of the writing games were of a group formation, static movement, and used the textbook material. Also, most of the writing games were competition games and the scoring criteria were based on accuracy, and the type of writing used in the writing games was controlled writing. Based on the results of the study, some guidelines for developing writing activities and effective means of teaching writing are suggested.

본 연구는 2015학년도부터 사용되고 있는 초등학교 영어 교과서의 쓰기 활동을 분석하여 교사들에게 적절한 교과서 비교 기준과 선택 기준을 제시하고, 교과서들이 지닌 문제점들을 찾아 보완점과 시사점을 추출함으로써 궁극적으로 학생들의 쓰기 능력 신장 및 교과서 내용과 교육방법의 개선방안을 모색해 보고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 초등학교 5, 6학년 영어 3종 영어 교과서의 쓰기 활동이 분석되었는데, 성취기 준 반영, 쓰기 활동 유형, 쓰기의 목적(장르), 쓰기 게임 등 총 네 가지 요소로 나누어 분석이 이루어졌다. 교과서 연구 분석 결과, 우선 성취기준 ‘낱말이나 어구를 쓴다.’ 가 가장 많이 제시되었다. 둘째, 통제 작문 유형이 유도 작문과 자유 작문에 비해 높은 비중을 차지하고 있었다. 셋째, 개인적인 글쓰기 장르가 가장 높은 비중을 차지 하였다. 마지막으로, 쓰기 게임의 조직은 모둠조직, 게임도구는 교과서, 학생들의 움 직임은 정적인 움직임, 게임의 경쟁적 요소는 경쟁 게임, 점수체계는 명확한 점수체 계가 제시된 게임, 쓰기 게임에서 활용된 쓰기 활동 유형은 통제 작문 유형이 활용된 게임이 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 효과적인 쓰기 지도를 위해 다양한 제언이 함께 이루어졌다.
