This study analyzed the effects of socioeconomic status on health level and medical service use by utilizing the data of the fifth Korea National. Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. After setting the income level, education level, and form of economic activity as the representative indicators to measure socioeconomic status and analyzing resulting differences in health level and medical service use, the study identified socioeconomic status as a factor influencing health level and medical service use. The phenomenon of health inequality according to socioeconomic status has not been newly confirmed, but the fact that it has continued on without any changes until recently raises a need to recognize the seriousness of the reality. The phenomenon of health inequality in our society takes place as social structural issues, which implies that there is a definite need for social interventions to resolve inequality to narrow down the gap between the social classes as well as policies at the level of health and medical service in order to reduce the gap in health level according to socioeconomic status and improve the level of national health.

본 연구는 제 5기 국민건강영양조사 자료를 이용하여 사회경제적 지위가 건강수 준과 의료서비스 이용에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석하였다. 소득수준, 교육수준, 경제 활동 형태를 사회경제적 지위를 측정하는 대표적인 지표로 설정하여 사회경제적 지 위가 건강수준과 의료서비스 이용에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 사회경제적 지위의 요인들이 건강수준과 의료서비스 이용에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 사실 사회경제적 지위에 따라 건강수준과 의료서비스 이용에 차이가 존재한다는 것은 갑자기 불거진 문제가 아니지만 사회양극화가 심화되고 있는 현실에 대한 심각 성을 인식할 필요가 있다. 우리사회에서 발생하는 건강불평등 현상은 사회구조적인 문제로 발생되기 때문에 사회경제적 지위에 따른 건강수준의 격차를 줄이고 국민건강수준의 향상을 위해서는 보건의료 차원의 정책만이 아니라 사회계층별 격차를 줄 일 수 있도록 불평등 해소를 위한 사회적 개입이 반드시 필요하다는 점을 시사해 준다.
