The Nivkh tribe tries to ensure the success in hunting and fishing through an amicable relationship with particular animals. Such idea entails animal worship naturally. However, toads and snakes show some different aspects from the general animal worship of the Nivkhs. These aspects commonly appear in the religious belief reflected in the Nivkhs' myths, statues of gods, and rituals. Toads and snakes have the characteristics as "moon animal" which has the symbolism of fecundity and life. They cause various diseases in the Nivkhs' belief. In the bear festival, they lead the soul of the dead bear to the world of mountains/forests. The conception of toads and snakes forms the world view of the Nivkh tribe across the origin of the tribe, construction of the universe, disease and death, and bear festival.
