This paper is a review article on the narrative characteristics of Kim Malbong’s representative 9 short stories. First, there can be found women’s fatalism in her short stories. The women represented in the novels, Mother, Spirit, Sound of the Wheels, and Record of a Downfall, come to become the others of men due to the hardships and the social conventions they had to undergo. That is to say, these novels show the unfairness and the contradiction of a patriarchal society by presenting the characters who cannot escape from their maternal and feminine destinies. Second, they present the formation of a gender identity. A Female Exile and A Female Thief represent the images of not submissive but strong women. These novel reveal with the female characters as media the writer’s interest in the social activities and roles of women, and the images of new women are reflecting the writer’s gender identity. Third, these novels carry the humors and the aesthetics of laughter. The dramatic reversals, unexpected developments, and the elements of jokes and humors add to the fun of the works. Trough the works, The Letter, Mortification, and The Feminine Mind, we find the writer, Kim Malbong, looking at the world delightfully. As mentioned above, she is delicately depicting the women’s psychology, and is dealing with their living conditions, desires, and even their social issues through the narration of her works.

이 논문은 김말봉의 대표 단편소설 9편을 텍스트로 하여 서사적 특징을 고찰한 글이다. 김말봉 단편소설에서는 우선, 여성의 운명론을 찾을 수 있다. ｢어머니｣, ｢망령(亡 靈)｣, ｢바퀴 소리｣, ｢전락(轉落)의 기록(記錄)｣에서 재현된 여성들은 그들이 겪어야 할 경제적 어려움과 사회적 관습으로 인해 남성의 타자로 존재하게 된다. 즉 이들 작품에서 김말봉은 모성애적, 여성적 운명을 벗어나지 못하는 인물을 제시하여 가부 장제 사회의 부당함과 모순을 보여준다. 둘째, 젠더 정체성의 반영이다. ｢망명녀(亡命女)｣, ｢여적(女賊)｣에서는 순종적인 여성이 아닌 강한 여성의 이미지를 재현한다. 여성의 사회활동과 사회적 역할에 대한 작가의 관심이 이들 여성인물을 매개로 드러난 것이며, 새로운 여성 이미지는 작가의 젠더 정체성을 반영하고 있다. 셋째, 반전과 유머를 들 수 있다. 극적 반전과 의외의 전개, 익살과 해학적 요소는 작품의 재미를 더해준다. ｢편지｣, ｢고행(苦行)｣, ｢여심(女心)｣등을 통해서 작가 김말 봉이 유쾌하게 세상을 바라보고 있음을 발견하게 된다. 살펴본 바와 같이 김말봉은 단편소설을 통해서 여성의 심리를 섬세하게 묘사하고 있으며, 여성들의 생활상, 욕망, 사회적 문제까지 작품의 서사를 통해 접근하고 있다.
