This paper aims to suggest a new typology of initiation story: autobiographical story and dramatic transition story. This suggestion is based on the fact that the autobiographical tradition of European Bildungsroman starting from the 19th century has continued as a classic of coming-of-age novels up to now, and on the other hand, the dramatic transition story, centered on radical and outside factors, has been catching on notably around English and American literature relatively later. In fact, M. Marcus’s classification method (the tentative, the uncompleted, and the decisive) has recently predominated the initiation stories. However, it is to be criticized for being too schematic and formal. In fact, the new ideas, such as post-modernism, have taken already root, and we need a new research in terms of thematic aspects. In addition, the initiation can take place anytime and anywhere and repeatedly in our lives. This idea seems to be somewhat worn-out, but also other scholars have not thought too much about it. Thus, this essay aims to demonstrate a new topology by observing the characters’ acts of the tree works—The Red Pony, The Black Stallion, and Duma and compare the autobiographical story and the dramatic transition story by listing the different characteristics.

이 논문에서 필자는 이니시에이션 스토리의 새로운 타이폴로지로서 자서전적 스 토리와 극적 전환적 스토리의 분류법을 제시한다. 이 의견은 유럽의 19세기 빌둥스 로만의 자서전적 스토리가 이른바 성장소설(coming-of-age novel)의 고전으로서 현 재까지 존속하고 있으며, 또 한편으로는 주로 영미문학을 중심으로 파격적이고 외부 적인 계기를 통한 극적 전환적 스토리가 상대적으로 뒤늦게 유행하고 있는 현실에 기초를 두고 있다. 그동안 유행하고 있는 M. 마커스의 이니시에이션의 강도에 따른 임시적, 미완적, 결정적 스토리의 삼분법은 도식적이고, 형식적이라는 비판을 받을 만하다. 즉, 포스트 모더니즘 등의 신사고가 정착되어 내용면에서도 연구가 이루어져 야 한다는 현실과 이니시에이션의 순간이 언제 어디서든 그리고 반복적으로 발생할 수 있다는 점이 그 이유이다. 이러한 사고가 보기에는 진부해 보일는지 모르지만, 사실상 학자들이 다소 소홀히 한 부분이 틀림없다. 그래서 이 에세이에서 필자는 세 작품 󰡔붉은 망아지󰡕, <검은 종마>, <듀마(Duma)>의 등장인물의 행위를 중심으로 새로운 타이폴로지를 예증하고, 자서전적 스토리와 극적 전환적 스토리의 서로 다른 경향을 상호 비교하고 있다.
