This article explores how Internet affected the manner in which information is created, organized and distributed, and studies the meanings of networked knowledge and knowledge systems based on the internet. First, the landscape of networked knowledge and it’s sociocultural meanings are examined by analysing the academic discourse on the characteristics and values of knowledge in the digital era. Network leads the specific areas of knowledge arises, and it becomes the base for the new knowledge production system which is characterized with openness, collaboration, and spontaneity. Secondly, it is considered that the limitations of optimistic perspectives on expanding networked knowledge directly leads to the new order and the development of democratic society. Despite the common assumption of the huge pool of knowledge and open access to knowledge production process, networked knowledge is bound to social conditions, so free information flow, open society, and democracy are still hardly gained. Knowledge is not any more a singular and absolute knowledge, but plural knowledge which is understood in the context of time, space and social factors. Lastly, this article encompasses the expertise issues drawing a line between common people and experts in the age of depreciation of the value of experts and their performances. There are two types of expertise, contributory expertise and interactional expertise. On the internet based on discourse or communication among people, interactional expertise is getting more important, and takes big position in the networked discourse. Interactional expertise, however, is about discourse to share ideas and communicate the information, not about substantive knowledge creation. So contributory expertise takes still solid position in knowledge creation even if the importance of interactional expertise is increasing. In the recent periods of digital revolution, the death of intellectuals or experts is declared. With the connectivity, openness, and unlimited volume, the internet re-mediates old media, old structure of knowledge production and the roles of intellectuals and experts. In the era of digital technology, therefore, it is crucial to apprehend the concepts and meanings of networked knowledge and to understand the prospect of network as general knowledge system as well.

본 연구는 네트워크에 기반한 새로운 지식과 지식 생산의 의미를 어떻게 이해할 것인가라는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 먼저 디지털 시대의 지식에 대한 학술적 담론 들을 비판적으로 고찰함으로써 네트워크 지식의 지형과 그것이 지닌 사회문화적 의 미를 정리하였다. 네트워크는 특정한 지식 범주를 부상하게 하고, 개방성, 협업, 자발 성 등을 특징으로 하는 새로운 지식 생산 체제의 기반이 되고 있다. 또한 네트워크에 기반한 지식이 확장되면서 기존의 지식체계를 무너뜨리고 새로운 질서를 구축함으 로써 민주적인 사회관계의 형성으로 바로 이어질 것이라는 낙관적인 담론들이 지닌 한계도 함께 살펴보았다. 네트워크 지식이 방대하고 그 지식을 누구나 생성하는 등 지식 생산이 집단지성에 기반하고 있다는 것만으로 인간의 삶이 다양해지고 사회가 개방적이고 민주적이 되리라 낙관하기에는 실제 현실의 조건이 중요하게 작용함을 인식할 필요가 있다. 마지막으로 네트워크를 통해 방대하게 형성되는 지식으로 인해 세계와 지식에 대한 질서를 부여했던 지식인의 가치가 하락하고 일반인과 전문가의 경계가 사라지고 있다는 논의들에서 배제된 전문가의 분화와 전문성의 문제에 대해 고찰하였다. 급속히 변화하고 있는 정보사회와 네트워크 지식의 담론 속에서 그것이 지닌 사회문화적 의미에 대해 파악하는 것은 현대 사회와 지식 체계로서 네트워크의 발전 방향과 전망에 대한 이해가 가능하다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
