This study was conducted to better understand the mediating roles of gender and proficiency with respect to written corrective feedback (WCF). The notion of accuracy was extended from linguistic to organization and contents, and the 21 items were the primary focus of the feedback. In addition, opinion paragraphs, which rarely received attention in previous WCF studies, were included. 226 university students participated in the study, and 1,130 writing samples were analyzed. The results of the study indicate that gender and proficiency do not interact with each other in determining the effects of WCF. Moreover, the differences in gender do not exclusively affect the results of WCF. However, the different levels of learners assigned in this study show distinctive results favoring intermediate and beginner level students. Among advanced level students, on the other hand, no difference between the pre-and post-test was reported. Rather than jumping to any hasty conclusion, however, the researchers acknowledge the incomparable nature of WCF studies and suggest that further research that would make comparisons possible among WCF studies be undertaken. The educational implications are provided for those who are dealing with diverse levels of learners when deciding what particular teaching content should constitute a priority in a limited time.

연구자는 문자교정지도(WCF: Written Corrective Feedback)에 성별(gender)과 언어 능숙도(proficiency)가 어떤 매개역할을 하는지를 알아보기 위하여 본 연구를 진행하였다. 이차언어에서 정확성의 개념은 언어적 영역, 글의 조직체계, 그리고 내용 영역까지 확대되며, 총 3개 영역의 21개 항목이 문자교정지도의 가장 중요한 초점이 되었다. 추가로 이전의 WCF 연구에서 거의 주목을 받지 못했던 의견문 (opinion paragraph) 또한 연구의 주된 내용으로 본 연구에서 다루기로 하겠다. 본 연구에는 226명의 대학생들이 참여하였고 1,130 편의 작문 표본을 분석하였 다. 본 연구 결과에 따르면 WCF의 영향을 판단하는데 있어서 성별과 언어 능숙도 는 상호간에 영향을 미치지 않는다는 것이다. 더욱이 성별의 차이가 WCF의 결과 에 유일무이한 영향을 미치지 않는다는 점이다. 그렇지만 본 연구에서 선정한 학 습자들의 각기 다른 언어숙달 수준은 초급과 중급 수준의 학생들에게서 뚜렷하게 유리한 차이를 보였다. 다른 한편으로 언어숙달 수준이 고급인 학생들은 전반적으로 사전테스트 (pre-test)와 사후테스트(post-test) 사이에 차이가 없는 것으로 보고되었다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 성급한 결론을 내리기 보다는 WCF에 관한 연구의 비교 불가한 특성을 연구자가 받아들이고 WCF 연구 간의 비교를 가능하게 할 수 있는 진일보된 연구에 착수할 것을 제안하고자 한다. 본 연구는 작문 수업의 시간 제약을 고려해 볼 때, 어떤 항목에 우선순위를 두 어야 할지 그리고 다양한 수준의 학습자를 지도해야 하는 현장의 교사에게 줄 수 있는 교육학적 함의는 무엇인지를 모색해 보고자 한다.
