Endo Shusaku won recognition and stands unchallenged in Modern Japanese Literature. He was consistent in metaphysical religious subjects from the age of 18, when he wrote "Metaphysical God, Religious God", to the age of 70, when he wrote "Deep River" which is his posthumous work. Accordingly, most of the proceeding studies about his works have been focused on his intention as a writer and religious issues which and Shusaku, a Catholic, wanted to talk about in his work, therefore, the logic and characters in his fiction have not been dealt with thoroughly yet. In this thesis, I placed great emphasis upon the literary works as art so I tried to exclude a Christian study method. The structure of his works and the works themselves are analyzed here in a narrator way that has been settled as today's literature study method. 「A Study on 『The White man』」, referring to some proceeding researches, the relationship between the main character " I and Jacker " is studied with priority given to the reason that the work was created and the characters of 『The White man』

엔도 슈사쿠(遠藤周作1923 1996)는 형이상학적신(形而上學的神) 종교적신(宗 敎的神) 을 저술한 18세부터, 유작(遺作)인 깊은 강(深い河) 을 저술한 70세에 이 르기까지 종교적 주제로 일관해 오면서 일본 현대문학에서는 거의 독보적인 존재 로 그 가치를 인정받았다. 따라서 선행연구 역시도 가톨릭 작가로서 엔도 슈사쿠 가 작품 속에서 이야기 하고자 하는 작가적 의도나 종교적 문제에 중점을 둔 것이 대부분이고, 허구내의 논리나 등장인물이 충분히 검토되지 않았다. 백색인 (白い人)에서는 위와 같은 기독교적인 연구 방법에서 벗어나 예술로 서의 문학작품, 즉, 문학 텍스트 그 자체를 연구대상으로 삼아 오늘날 문학연구 방 법으로 정착한 화자(카타리데)에 착안해서 작품의 구조와 그 세계를 분석했다. 연 구방법으로서는 선행연구를 참고로 작품의 생성 원인과 백색인 의 구성인물상을 중심으로 주인공<나>와 <쟈크>, 두 사람의 관계를 고찰했다. 분석결과 도출된 결 론은 소설내의 인물들의 시점 설정이 작가의 의도와는 달리 마지막에는 확실하게 결실을 맺지 못한 작품의 구조적인 문제점이 도출되었다. 그러나 다양한 소설의 기교론, 방법론을 통해 그리스도교라는 유일 종교를 넘어서 인간존재의 근본적인 문제를 직시하면서 병들어 신음하는 인간 영혼의 치유와 구제의 주제, 즉 그리스 도적인 신의 사랑의 구현을 추구했다는 점에서 백색인 이 지향하는 의의를 찾을 수 있었다.
