Under the assumption that the concept of ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil,’ which has frequently been employed throughout the history of Korean novels, could be useful in understanding history from the aspect of style, this study aims to verify the effectiveness of the concept as well as to prove that the method of analysis of novels. To that end, the usage of ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil’ was thoroughly reviewed and decided it should only refer to a narrative model of "hardship of the good is happiness while gaining power of the bad is destruction." It means that the concept of ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil’ would be used only for the structural good and evil which exist in the deep-lying layer of stories. Also, in an effort to expose the aspects of such novels, many concepts were hired including ‘the ideology or value fundamental to the good and the bad,’ ‘the aspect of encouraging good,’ ‘the aspect of punishing evil,’ ‘the property of hardship,’ ‘the property of recovery,’ ‘the subject of punishing,’ and ‘the property of punishing.’ This paper have selected the Korean New Novel as an object to reveal ‘Encouraging Good and Punishing Evil’, as a Method of Researching the modern novels.

이 글에서는 신소설이라는 말이 가리키는 대상과 범주가 명확치 않아, 이 말을 살려 쓰기 위해서는 그 개념을 보다 구체화할 필요가 있다고 보고, 신소설이 신소 설일 수 있는 근거들을 텍스트 내적 분석을 통해 찾아내려고 하였다. 권선징악 양 식의 변모, 해체를 중심으로 신소설을 살피면, 그 안에는 크게 두 유형이 존재함을 알 수 있다. 하나는 권선징악 양식이 지속된 유형이고, 다른 하나는 권선징악 양식 자체가 변이를 일으킨 유형이라고 할 수 있는데, 전자를 지속형 소설로, 후자를 변 이형 소설로 구분하였다. 지속형 소설에서는 주제소와 성격소가 분열되어 구조적인 파탄을 초래한 경우 가 많았다. 이 유형에서는 변이형에 비해 고소설의 잔존이 더 많이 발견되었다. 반 면, 변이형에서는 선인이 수난을 견디다 못해 자살하거나 희생되는 경우도 있고, ‘병’ 등 전시대 전통에서 찾기 어려운 요소도 보인다. 「혈의 누」는 최초로 권선징 악의 서사구조 자체가 변이를 일으킨 소설이다. 이 소설에는 징악과정이 없다. 악인의 소멸은 갈등을 인물 대 인물이 아니라, 서사의 심층으로 이동하게 하는 효과 를 가져왔다. 주체 혹은 내면이 근대를 나타내는 중요한 징표들 가운데 하나라고 할 때, 「혈의 누」는 그 터전을 마련한 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 권선징악의 변이형은 한국문학사에서 매우 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 신소설의 ‘신’이 구 소설의 ‘구’와 대립된 개념이라고 할 때, 서서구조가 변모된 유형만을 진정한 의미 에서 신소설로 부를 수 있게 하기 때문이다.
