This study focused on women in "colonized Joseon," analyzing the female characters of Toji (The Land) by Park Kyung-ri. The characters were thus categorized into two types under the goal of analyzing changes to the gender roles of colonial women by imperialism: the pro-Japanese type was assimilated with Japanese imperialism and actively adapted to it, while the other type resisted Japanese imperialism. The subjects of the study were Hong Seong-suk, the main character, and the mother of Hong Su-gwan, a marginal character, to keep the readers reminded that Toji (The Land) is a narrative that minutely constructs a colonial period. It was judged that both center and margin should be taken into account to confirm Toji (The Land) as a narrative that minutely constructs a colonial period. The approach was also considered to be persuasive in order to compare with Joseon women reacting to imperialism. The study would thus be able to show that the lives of all the characters of the work breathed with the colonial period, however roughly it would be.

본고는 『토지』 여성인물을 분석함에 있어 ‘식민지가 된 조선’의 여성에 초점 을 두었다. 이를 위해 두 가지 인물유형으로 분석하였다. 하나는 일본 제국주의에 동화되어 적극적으로 순응한 친일파 유형이며, 다른 하나는 일본 제국주의에 저항 한 인물유형이다. 이는 본고가 식민지 여성의 성역할이 제국주의에 의해 어떻게 변화하고 있는지를 분석하는 것에 목적을 두었기 때문이다. 이때 『토지』 전체가 식민지 시대를 치밀하게 구성하는 서사임을 확인시키기 위해서 중심인물 홍성숙 과 주변인물 홍수관 어머니를 연구대상으로 하였다. 토지 전체가 식민지 시대 를 치밀하게 구성하는 서사임을 확인시키기 위해서는 중심과 주변이 함께 고찰되 어야 한다고 생각하기 때문이며 동시에 제국주의에 반응하는 조선 여성을 대조하 기 위해서는 이 방법이 설득적이라고 판단하기 때문이다. 이를 통해서 개략적이나 마 작품 속 모든 여성인물들의 삶이 식민지 시대와 함께 호흡하고 있음을 보여줄 수 있게 될 것이다.
